Hi guys,

After searching vigorously for a previous gold coin with mixed views on authenticity, D.Sear confirmed it was a forgery and that they was never made in gold for that specific coin.

So when I read that this coin is 'unpublished', it rings alarm bells, what do you guys think of this one?

This piece does not resemble any know coin of Phocas, though the obverse is similar to that of SB 631, the reverse totally different. The lettering of the legends look wrong and the mint mark should be CONB not CON?. IMO 100% fake.

Thanks echizento

I would agree from my limited knowledge. The seller has used the fact of it being unpublished, and rare mintmark as selling tactics, which I think is a little naughty, because no doubt, this is another coin that is going to be sold at a premium to an innocent collector, probably quite new. Its a real shame.

How often do GENUINE unpublished coins come up? as I am guessing there are still new varieties found? probably more rarer varieties hence the lack of previous findings?

It would be nice to find/ get hold of a coin this scarce, but I don't think I could ever take the gamble now if I cannot identify the coin, as even if it is genuine, it could easily be branded as fake due to the amount of modern day forgeries there are

Unpublished roman coins do pop up because there was a ton of them made and when you have emperors dying shortly after taking over, rouge generals proclaiming themselves emperor, and someones coins minted somewhere that wasn't known, it's bound to happen. As for this coin I agree with echizento.

Depends, I come across unpublished examples of Roman coins from the Balkan mints whenever I buy them, there is a limit to how much Ivan Varbanov can cram into his 3 volumes on the subject. He gets info on new examples emailed to him every day.

I've also come across unpublished variations for Probus of the Serdica mint.

And they were all genuine.

As mentioned before, if you are still looking to buy genuine gold late Roman / Byzantine coins, I suggest VCoins or Forum Ancient Coins.

I think PP has summed that one up beautifully.

Looks barbarous in style to me.
It would probably be necessary to delve deep into the coin cabinets of Eastern European museums to prove genuine barbarous.

Unpublished variants come up *constantly*. I've been working on cataloguing the coinage of Domitian whose coinage is overall very well known and covered by the latest RIC published less than ten years ago and in the last few days have found at least a half dozen not found there.

The early Byzantine coinage is very streamlined so one would expect fewer variants there but even in that case it's the same story; see, for example, the unlisted variants added to the ERIC III draft section on Constans III I released for free download last year.
