Looks like this nickel got stuck in a coin sorting machine and it was being forced into the dime slot. The visable part of the nickel has been reduced to 15.83mm. The overall size is slightly larger than a nickel and off shape measuring 23.00mm at the narrowest and 23.71mm at the widest. The faint design of the nickel can still be faintly seen in obilerated portion. Any ideas?

That is very interesting damage. A dime slot would have made the impression 17.9 mm or a little larger. I would like to see what the experts say

I don't see anyway a dime slot or sorting machine could have done this. I have no idea.

That's a puzzler. The collar on the 'nickel' makes me think that somebody took a hammer to a nickel and a dime... Or.... maybe the collar was not properly set at the mint.... Take a look at this. http://error-ref.com/compound-and-c...-errors.htmlIt's not the same but ...maybe it IS a complex error.

It's a vise job between 2 washers.

Thanks Pyrbob. That would fit all the damage to this nickel. Thank you.

Vise and two washers with a straight line on one side instead of round. Then tightened into a vise to distort the coin, but inside the washers, the devices stayed normal.

Im in agreement with all of the above except maybe one thing. Would a vice be able to widen the coin that much? Looks like its twice the size as it should be. I would think what ever did this was hydraulic. I couldn't turn a vice that hard.
