When the area in question show flat shelf like doubling, it is Machine Doubling, which is really coin damage.

Note how the die movement, reduces the size of the devices. On a doubled die the devices are enlarged, not reduced.

I am on this site and using the forum because I understand that even though I've been collecting coins most my life I have only been reading and studying Error and Variety types for a few months, And as let down as I was by some of my responses (Normal i'd say) I was honestly more excited to personally find a better coin, and an even better coin then that one. I honestly thought that the 1983 D Penny I submitted a few days ago was at-least RPM if not the (forgot the code now for it) what was clear to me with my own eyes and being the only thing on the coin besides a few letters hear and there that I had matched it up with photos as the 83 3/3 and was curious as to what everyone here thought. With this being said, It may very well be the crappy 2D images from a Scanner or the quality of 2400 DPI but the coin above has to be a world record for heaviest MD lol The E Pluribus Unum is clear though my scope as what almost looks like a third Die stamp but is near impossible to see in this photo, But the letters cross though each other and there are serifs and knobbing. As well as clear see able stamping issue. Out of the thousands and thousands of coins I've searched though this coin is darn near blurry to even look at. Every letter and device shows a clear second image and not just a line. PLEASE! Someone explain to me in detail why this coin in your opinion isn't doubled? And please keep in mind that I'm not guessing or unaware of what I'm looking for. I'm simply saying I cant seem to take a picture that shows the image raised as it is on the coin. Thank you and sorry for the rant, I'm just very serious about wanting to know everything about coins and feel like pictures aren't saying a million words. Smile all

To me, the "shelf-like" nature is the key here. They can definitely look blurry... I have an MD example I posted a while back with up to four strikes: https://goccf.com/t/168743
