They tend to come from the bank, be given out as change once at a store, tossed in a jar, sit in a jar for long periods (months, years, decades) and eventually cashed in at a bank or CoinStar kiosk. I have occasionally found coins from the early 60's and 70's that look like they could have been minted last week. Report this Post to the Staff
mdrosophila Pillar of the Community United States 724 Posts	Posted 02/23/2014 09:43 am when a copper penny is not circulated much, it has a red original color. After it is worn during circulation, the color turns to brown. So it is just a circulated penny retaining some of the lust in your photo. As other pointed out, 1984's proofs should have a S mint mark and mirror-like reflective surface. If you found one without the S mark, you either have a mistake or score big.
