Someone on a local forum is selling these 4 coins. Love the look of them, not sure of a fair price to offer for them, he is saying £200 'but I know nothing about them' Are these identifiable from these pics? do they look genuine and what would be a fair price to offer for them? Thanks  |

To be a bit careful. You can't identify coins without seeing both sides. Top right is a bit tatty, so unless it is a rare emperor probably not worth £50. Not too sure of the ones left top and bottom, don't like the very dark tone.

Yea, I see that kind of toning mainly on silver from 1800's in UK coins, these coins have to be cleaned or they wouldn't be showing so much detail (I would assume), and if they are cleaned, this would probably not leave toning behind.
I wouldn't pay the 200 for them, but if they are genuine I would pay over 100. will upload if I get more pics, where are they from (or supposed to be from)?
I have never seen a roman like the bottom right so I assume that is def not roman? but it doesn't look Greek to me either.
Top left says roma on it but looks more greek to me too?

The two on the left are supposed to be republican but without the other side of the coins they will be difficult to identify.
If you go to acsearch put in "biga roma" and see what comes up. I think it is supposed to be Victory driving the biga. It might be worth asking if the seller will refund before you put an offer in.

Thanks Pish, so this is quite early Roman times being 62BC.
In theory based on what I just looked at, if they are genuine, £200 for the 4 could turn out a good price.
Does the texture of the bottom right look ok to you?

I am no expert on these. Bottom right is worn. The other examples on wildwinds and acsearch have more "blobby" letters, but I would prefer that others jump in an give an opinion.
Hopefully if you can get more pics things will be a bit clearer. To my untutored eye, I would have said that the bottom right looks the most authentic. Definitely wait to see the other sides before you make any decision.

I am thinking the 2 on the left are these: http://cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=129379Which would but the value about £80-£120 each if genuine, the bottom left, looks like the value would be at about £60-70 based on cng results. The top right is in bad condition, so I would say possibly £10-£20. So that would mean the £200 is fair... if they are genuine! Any other thoughts.... Ben, where are you when I need you :) |

You are correct with your ID on the two left denarii I believe, and pish gave you the ID for the bottom right.

Hm...Im not happy with those, I'm afraid. Bottom right certainly has more porousity than id be comfortable with. Top right, thats authentic and its Septimius Severus.
The other two are a type I've never had in hand and whilst I see nothing immediately wrong, caution must be exercised. Id have a good look through the type on the FORVM fake reports before going any further.

I am with Ben on this one. The two on the left make me a little uneasy. The Septimius Severus is in dreadful condition and you can pick up much better examples.
I have been looking at the bottom right. It is the reverse I expected. This coin is very worn. I have looked at the examples on acsearch, looking for worn coins. They are there and the legends are more prominent than yours and more "blobby".
I would check the fake reports. The portraits on the biga coin are a bit more dopy looking than the CNG example. I would look for more examples of those for comparison.

Personally I would walk away from this set. If you look at the CNG example and then look at the example on forgerynetwork at http://www.forgerynetwork.com/asset...keLhniKcPjc=Compare the two coins looking at style, the one from CNG screams quality. If you then compare the coins in your photo, they have more in common with the forgery than the CNG example. See if you can find other examples of the coins on other sites like FAC. |
