Check out this screen cap from eBay--do you notice anything special about one of these mid-grade IHCs?

Is the 1888 a 1888/7 over the last8?

Are you suggesting that the 1888 is an S-1. I see the Cud at 9:00 o'clock, but I am not sure if that is the bottom of the 7 below the 8. It looks to be too far to the right.

I think beaglebailey guessed right about the Cud at 9:00 possibly indicating an S-1.

DV, I have to admit that I am stumped. The Cud looks exactly as it should for an 1888/7, but whatever is sticking out at the bottom of the last 8 is too far to the right. I looked at quite a few pictures and in all cases the bottom of the 7 is protruding to the left of the lower loop of the 8, not under it as it is in your picture. I don't think that this is an S-1

It's hard to tell. But it does cast the shadow to the right.

This wasn't so much a trick question as to see how collectors here might react to seeing these coins on ebay
Would this photo be enough for you to bid--given the possible payoff?
As far as I know, there is no other 1888 obverse with that matching rim Cud. If the coin was doctored, it wasn't being sold as an 1888/7.

My first reaction: Wow, those rim Cuds...are in the exact position! And the date position is correct too--I know I would would have bitten!
Yeah, the 8/7 is sorta indistinct--but there's still a lot of confirming information. I would've analyzed this picture very carefully in photoshop.

True story--this coin lot was spotted by Rick Snow in Oct 2012 on ebay. A lot of other bidders weren't that sure--the max bid was just $47!
Rick Snow put in a safety snipe bid of $5000--so I guess he was that certain. I'm not sure I would've bid that much, but wish I had looked!

The story ends with the coin certified by PCGS as the Snow-1 in VF35. Rick Snow sold it for just shy of $10K. He's says it's his best cherrypick ever.

Regarding the appearance of the 8/7, I've cobbled together a group of certified examples. Notice how they can look slightly different due to lighting, grade, and other issues.

Well...I over-analyze everything. I had the advantage here--I knew the ending to the story.
