Quote: Yes you are correct. I dont see how you can call yourself a collector. If you sell coins. Dont jump down my thoat...not to mention the fact my reply was "if you really want to get into it...Id say 100% are for sale at any given time. Everything has its price". The key being "id say". As in MY OPINION. Yes. I am a collector but like jbuck said, I sell and upgrade. So for you to make it personal like..."How can you call yourself a collector? How dare you?"...go somewhere else with that. There are however, coins I have that I have a special connection to as in a common Morgan 78p VAM 84a PCGS 63 OGH that was picked solely by my 5 year old nephew. Yes, he is the one that saw the clashes. Would I sell it for 200, no. 300? likely not. But yes there is a price...it would be high and no I wouldnt feel bad for selling it as NOBODY can my memory of that day. I will ad tho...with that $ from the sale I would likely put it into his college fund so really, I think thats worth it as we can hit the shows and make more memories. And for people who tell me that there is NO PRICE..im sorry, I'm not making it a personal attack or anything (like some here) but I call BS! Whatever it may be...say a 2000g value coin and someone is offering you 20k? In CASH, sitting in stacks on your coffee table... Come on now! There is so much more you can do with that like padding your financial future, buying other high end pieces, padding your portfolio etc. The fact you could get so much more out of a coin ie memories, fun, other coins...almost anything by selling or trading it rather than crossing your arms, shutting your eyes and saying "NOPE"...not to mention likes and wants change over time...usually

I have a few coins in my collection that I consider to be my favorites... That being said, a stack of cash on the table that lets me turn a great profit, I will have a few new favorites...

Thank you for the responses everyone! A lot of good analysis. Quote: I suspect the for-sale percentage for famous rare coins will be higher than that for common coins, since coin dealer like the prestige that having such coins in stock brings them [.....]
Good point. There are expensive coins out there that seem to hit the auction block every five years or so. Just look at how many times a 1913 V-Nickel has been sold in the past decade.

Thank You! Exactly! All I'm saying is money talks! And there is NOTHING wrong with someone who realizes that and understands everything about that! And that definitely doesn't mean your less of a person, or "COLLECTOR" for that matter. It just makes sense...

Quote: I dont see how you can call yourself a collector. If you sell coins. Now that is a pretty sweeping statement and I totally disagree with it 100%. I buy and sell coins all the time and I imagine that a large percentage of other collectors do the same thing. I haven't decreased my Australian, New Zealand , Canadian or US collections by selling them. In fact I have increased all of these and improved the sets over the years a large part due to the profits made by trading coins, I cannot see anything wrong doing this. I personally get a huge "Buzz" out of sourcing rare or valuable coins that I really do not need for my collections and selling them (Hopefully at a profit). I have only just started to get coins graded by PCGS and NGC, Something I would never have thought I would do. Since September last year I have had 92 coins graded and slabbed of which I have only kept a handful for my own collections, the rest have and will be sold over the next few months. Saying that because I sell coins doesn't make me a collector is just rude and bloody ridicules . I have thousands of coins in my collections and I certainly don't consider those as "Inventory" they are simply "MY Collections" and I will continue to improve these. We all collect in different ways and for different reasons BUT at the end of the day we are ALL collectors

Didn't mean to get everyone panties twisted in a wad. My apologies for such a broad statement. But my definiton of a collector still stands. I never said it was a cardinal sin to upgrade or sale your coins. Heck they are yours do what you want with them. It was just my opinion of what the definition of a collector is. So anyone that took offense.I can promise you it was not stated with malice in mind. I guess some of the time when people ask for opinions they really mean aren't asking. Anyway no harm no foul intended on my part anyway. Thanks for the education.

There are those that collect cars, postage stamps, Beaning Babies, guns and on and on. Some collectors of stuff just accumulate those with no intent to get rid of for any reason. Some collectors try to upgrade by selling off lesser items. Some collectors buy and sell all the time but keep favorites. There are so many ways to be a collector. Myself, I sometimes wish I could get rid of excessive quantities of coins or other accumulated items. My problem is I constantly keep everything in coins as I upgrade. Is that a collector or a hoarder or a accumulator or what? It's all just a hobby and people do with it as they want. It's all in fun.

And yes maybe I am a collector/hoarder. I just never really wanted to piss anyone off on this site. I use it for the abundant coin information it produces. And has helped me tremendously in my collecting/hoarding.
