In case you didn't read the email, ebay is updating their seller standards and it looks like it will be pretty hard to keep a decent seller rating. They say I'm not too awfully defective and predict I'll still be worthy to sell with my 10 year old 100% positive feedback account. In fact after 10 years with nary a complaint they've ever so graciously given me the lofty grade of "Standard". They put up a discussion board for members to comment and I didn't read a single one that said anything positive about the new policies. So far all I've seen for changes in the Coins & Paper Money category is they've slimmed down the categories. You used to have, say Indian Head cents, and they were broken down into a couple different date ranges, now it's in all one. Same for most of the other coin categories. Many folks not happy about a new 90 day return policy but I think that's just to keep a top rated seller rating and get a discount on ebay fees. To me it sounds like if you sell silver or gold you have to finance the speculators, if the price goes up, your buyer will be happy to keep the metal and if the price goes down guess what, they can just return it! Now I'm seeing talk of a seller revolution on the message board, hopefully they can rally the troops but I imagine ebay will start deleting posts to try to quell the uprising.

I am just getting tired of getting messages about it. From what I read, it isn't going to affect me much.

I believe the 90 day return policy is only for november and december. Probably going to be slim pickings those months as no ones going to want to offer a return policy that long and casual sellers with top rated will probably just wait until january to sell. For as good as ebay is the decision makers arent the sharpest tools in the shed. They seem too want to mess up a good thing as much as they can. As always some changes were good, some were bad, and most could have been good with a little common sense applied

There is no chance I am doing a 90 day return policy.

yeah, I was about to hit the 100 transactions mark last month, which was the last parameter I had to hit to get top seller/fee discount....so I knew in my next 'review' I would be there. I changed auctions to 1 day handling and returns allowed. Looks like I'll only enjoy that until this fall because I will not allow 90 days for returns. Brick stores would laugh at that policy on their new only items.

This makes it difficult to offer free shipping. Also, paypal doesn't refund 100% of the fees. That being said, returns are pretty uncommon.

The categories being slimmed down looks like they will be replaced by listing specifics. So if you previously had an IHC in a date range category, you would choose Indian Head cents as the category and the date range in your item specifics. Sellers will need to make sure to *use* the item specifics or their listings won't show up in a search where the buyer is looking for it. So it'll make things more convoluted for the sellers. As for the 90-day return policy for the holidays, how in the world are they going to do that when you can't even see listings after 90 days? The burden, again, will be on the sellers as they'll have to track sales elsewhere in order to remember who bought what after they are unavailable. If someone tries to return something on day 89 because there was an issue with it, nobody will able to tell what was sold or what it looked like 2 days later, so their claim will most likely be automatically approved. Unless, of course, they are planning on lengthening the time that completed auctions can be viewed - but I haven't seen anything about that. Either way, I foresee many sellers forgoing Top Rated and its associated discounts during that time frame.. either by refusing the longer return window or by not listing at all. And if they don't list at all, they'll probably lose Top Rated altogether.

It is definitely going to be harder to keep TRS, and TRS+. I finally got it, and now at 3 months consecutive. But I see lots of problems ahead with the new "defect rate" policy.
and for the holiday period starting 11-1-14 I won't be using the 90 day returns accepted just to get a little TRS logo on my listings.

So today I received a low shipping rating. Sold a coin for 99 cents and charged $3.90 for shipping. Apparently the person who bought the coin for a tenth of it's value thought the shipping was too high. They knew what the shipping would be before purchase, so why complain now? Somehow I think this has less to do with buyer satisfaction and more to do with ebay weaseling out of TSR discounts.

Actually, just reread the update. Apparently neither shipping cost nor communication will count as defects. Time to start overcharging and being rude about it!

But shipping costs and communication can still bring a negative. In fact, if you do not care about top rated you can get a negative for not accepting the return even if you do not offer it. Buyers have too much power.
