I have been sorting through Indian Head cents I have found over the years when I noticed that this 1878 has what may be a doubled United States. There isn't anything listed on the Cherry Picker's Guide though. Anyone knows if this is a known double die for the year?
There are no doubled dies known for this year. What you have there is a classic example of Longacre doubling. It is considered a pretty common event and will not add any premium to the coin.
What you have there is a nice AU details coin in a tougher date though. Looks like it was probably shiny when it was lost in the ground for a number of decades.
Thanks RedRaider! That is helpful information. I hadn't noticed the doubling until I removed the crust of soil that had layered the coin. There is environmental damage, but even so it is a nice looking Indian Head cent.
