Seeing this auction ( 261449603411) got me wondering. While it's a major DDO for the series, the markers are nearly worn off the coin. Do you think it has any premium over a normal 1887 in this ($2) condition--$69 worth? The markers are easier to see in this pic: On a nicer coin, it looks like this: Edited by DVCollector 04/11/2014 9:43 pm

I know this is one of the top 10 varieties, but when you pay a considerable premium for a variety, you don't want a coin so worn that the markers of the variety are nearly or completely worn away. It kind of defeats the purpose of buying the variety. So, I think this coin is considerably overpriced, and I most likely would pass on this coin and wait for a better example. I certainly would not pay anywhere his BIN price.

You explained my reasoning perfectly--I want to see the variety! FWIW, I paid just $10 for the DDO in the second picture.

Definitely not a $69 coin, Unlike the others, I wouldn't even shell out $10, perhaps $6.

It is a very difficult variety in high grade, no doubt. I have picked a few in coin shops and ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1887-Indian...047675.l2557Here is a recent auction where a problem free VG went for under $30 shipped. In higher grades, the value goes up quickly. I think a problem free XF would bring $200 or more.

Nice DVCollector! $30 is a great deal on this coin. The pics you took are much better, might go F12 from the pics you provided. I would expect a coin in that shape to go for closer to $75.

Thanks Red--I thought so too. I sold that one to a collector--they got a great deal. I've kept the one in the second picture...I would grade it around VF30.

Wow--it doesn't look like the seller knew what they had--a bit of a bidding war there, congrats! I got this one off ebay for $15--the pic was sorta fuzzy in the DDO area, but I spotted it.
