Saxony, 3 mark, 1913 - 100 years since the Battle of Leipzig, where Napoleon's forces were defeated for good. This monument was built for the centennial at huge expense - it's incredibly huge and maybe a bit over-done. In 2013 this event and monument were commemorated again, this time on a coin from Russia. This is one of my better bargains, cost me only $10

Cool!, I recall seeing one of these before, I wanted it but it was cleaned and overpriced even for an uncleaned coin.:-(

From the German states. Baden, 1 kreuzer, 1852 Baden was an upper-medium-sized state, not too important but still not just a speck on the map. Hopefully we'll see all kinds of titles and peerages in this thread - Leopold here was a Grand Duke, safely below the level of King (held by only four monarchs in the Second Reich - those of Prussia, Bavaria, Saxony and Württemburg). Sadly, the era of the microstate is over and the only remaining Grand Duchy in the world is little Luxembourg.

German East Africa, 1 heller, 1904 A really corroded piece of Germany's sad overseas empire. As much as they wanted to bill themselves as a major colonial power, the UK and France had already divided up most of the known world, leaving Germany only a few little islands and a couple African countries which were all revoked after 1918.

Wow, thanks nalaberong for both the pics and the great history!, I forgot all about the colonial German stuff.

Here is an NGC graded 1902 Baden 2 Mark. Nice chocolate toning with a few ripples of color on the back. For whatever reason this 2 Mark issue tends to tone really well.

And you can't have a German coin thread without at least 1 of these. Ideally you have several.

Not mine, but this sold in the Heritage Auctions that were done in conjunction with the Chicago coin show a few weeks ago, and I thought it was stunning.
