Keeping to the older Germanic coins - a Prussian 1631 1 Groschen. Quite a common coin for it's age.

Quote: 1631 1 Groschen. Even older ... 1531! I'll take it back another couple of hundred years with this unusually large bracteate from the Bishopric of Halberstadt dateable to 1160-1177 (the quarter was just used to demonstrate size):

I wish mine were as old as yours are.
My oldest one is 1875 and the rest are all in the 1900s

Quote: this unusually large bracteate from the Bishopric of Halberstadt That is huge for a bracteate! I didn't know this coin existed - thanks for sharing it. Great example too. The iconography is so striking - it reminds me of something I've seen elsewhere - I'll have to think on that. Those circulating commemorative such as the Max Planck one do look cool. Germany seemed to embrace the idea of circulating commemoratives quite early. Today I'll go with this lowly copper - Coesfeld 1713 8 Pfennigs

There are a handful of German cities with a cow in their coat of arms, including also Wismar an maybe Mecklenburg if I recall. I wasn't aware of Coesfeld before this thread, and the Roman numeral VIII for a denomination I had not seen outside of Spain before.

Quote: Coesfeld 1713 8 Pfennigs Very cool coin, Bacchus! I had to look it up, because I wasn't sure about the obverse effigy. I didn't want to think that it was a really ugly human, but who knows! So it's a steer wearing a crown - very unusual.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures
