Thank you all for posting these wonderful coins! But I must say that you're tempting me to fall into the trap of bracteates.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Nice recent additions. Keith, the coin designs on your examples are very interesting.

Great examples - I particularly like the city scape image on the Magdeburg denar. A Nassau 1848 1 Kreuzer issued by Duke Adolph.

I guess this qualifies as my earliest "German" coin, a temple denar with pseduo-legends that is attributed to Magdeburg late 10th c. (some auction houses have it 965-985, others 970-1000). It must have circulated widely in Poland before they had a coinage of their own, since earlier Polish catalogs include it.

I corrected it, Keith. It was a typo. Quote:Don't believe everything they teach you in school Haha, I don't. I've forgotten most of the stuff anyways.

There are some fantastic coins in this thread guys! Here is a recent notgeld pickup. Wotan (pretty much Odin) doing Gandalf cosplay and a cool hunting scene on the reverse. Looks like the hounds have been released as well as two birds and a bat?
