This made him the first cousin of Kaiser Wilhelm II. Despite these close Prussian ties, he maintained Baden's distinct identity. This 1909 coin was struck during the stable "Belle epoque" period of his reign, before he became the first German prince to announce he would not resist the revolution in 1918. He turned his capital, Darmstadt, into a world-renowned center for modern art and architecture. That kinda comes through with his official photo which seems very modern and not at all like the normal photo's of aristocracy at the start of the 20th Century (1905).
