Recently won an auction on ebay for a 1945 WLH. It's missing the designer's intitials on the reverse "AW". Pics are a little blurry but I'm going to say XF45 at BEST. Any idea what these are going for these days? I know the Cherrypicker's Guide says (well whatever it says, I'm at work) $xx but I'm not sure how accurate those hold up to be. If somehow I'm wrong. I overpaid only by a couple bucks. Guess I'll have to eat a 6" sub instead of a 12" today! Cherrypicker's Guide has been very good to me. I need to buy the first volume, only have the second (as it covers all my major interests except Bust Halves).

Cherrypickers is a good source, but the prices are inaccurate.
Usually too high

I will post a photo when I have it in hand for sure. Like I said, I might have missed it but I'm 90% sure I didn't. It's a fairly obvious mark. Wish there was an easier way to gauge some of these DDO, DDR, missing this, added that type items.

How about stating the ebay number or snagging the images from the listing?

Received the coin today. Disappointed.
The AW is there but VERY VERY light. Lightness of the AW doesn't fit with the condition of the coin. I see no marks of an attempt to remove the AW. So I'm not sure if it was just a light strike, worn die, or what. You have to tilt the coin just right under really bright LEDs to see it. I'll mess around and try to get some pics this week. I work the next two nights so I doubt I'll have time.

The AW is incuse on the coin which means that the initials are raised on the die and susceptible to being polished off the die easily or chipped/broken off. The initials are also in a field area which is the highest parts of the die. That means the initials are actually the highest point on the die and most likely to be damaged. I'm surprised there aren't a lot more missing initals half dollars.

Hello all! I have been watching a number of these (unattributed) lately on the bay and wondering some things. Is the missing AW due to die polish and if so why is that not noted in The CPG? Or is it a case of one or a number of dies making it through the die making process without getting the initials? I think the first scenario is the most likely. So what if a die gets polished partially removing the initials and then subsequent die wear removed the remaining traces of the initials leaving only the last strikes to qualify for the designation? Die polishing marks should be present and die markers must be there but none are noted in the reference. If there are multiple dies involved , which is entirely believable since the mint has many examples of polished circulation strike dies and as I understand it die polishing was standard operational procedure for clash die repair, then the poulation should be higher than it currently is. Terapeak reports only one low grade coin being sold within the last year and 4 or 5 examples with very high prices not selling. Any thoughts?

Quote: Or is it a case of one or a number of dies making it through the die making process without getting the initials? It really isn't possible to get through the die making process without the initials. The initials are in the hub (or they would be missing on all the dies) and they are incuse in the hub so they can't get broken off the hub. So they have to be there on the die after it is hubbed. The only way to lose them after that is fro them to be chipped off the die or polished away. And since they are both raised and the absolute highest point on the die polishing is a very good way to remove them.
