Hi tassie here, since being new to coin collecting I was wondering if anyone could give me a few pointers on what look for when it comes to die cracks of other faults that may appear. Any bit of information would be greatly appreciated. ***Edited by Forum Dad to remove all capital letters.*** |

G'day, if you dredge through the older threads under the heading "errors", you find some pics that illustrate die cracks, Cuds, etc. Also, try the non-Oz forums, and look for threads on "errors". Don't confuse "errors" with "varieties", although they arguably* overlap sometimes. [*not an argument that I want to get into] Personally, I don't find errors very fascinating, with the possible exception of mules. Others devote enormous effort to finding errors, and listing them. Some people pay a premium for examples. To me, that's even sillier than playing golf. Peter in Darwin |

Welcome to the Forum Tassie. It can be a bit of a challenge finding error coins but also a bit of fun too. Key errors after the 2000 $1 mule would be the dollar rabbit ear Cud found on 1984, 85 scarce, 94, 98, 2000, 2006 $1 coins, the 2001 Centenary of Federation $1 upsets then there are the mistrikes, rim Cuds. Wayne, are these die cracks and Cuds offered at premium in your local coin shops. I am a variety cent collector here in the US, I am just starting an Australian penny collection. I bought a variety book, hope to work on those also, I have a bit of learning to do about grading the penny, but I am always fascinated with die cracks and Cuds. |

Dave most dealers dont look for pre-decimal die cracks to sell, it's not worth the time for the small number of sales for them.
There's plenty of them about though, not hard to find on pre-decimal coins.
I'm working on a reference site other than the Aussie forum but that has been on hold at the moment due to server issues. That one I should be able to work on again shortly.
It will help you pick a real variety from an error which the current Aussie variety book completely ignores.

That sound very interesting, please keep us posted. I am the webmaster of the Fly-In club, a group that specializes in Flying eagle and Indian Head cent varieties. We try to post as much info on the varieties as possible. I ran a search for Australian penny varieties and was also given a few sites to check out from this forum. It sure appears to me that the Australian mints work a little harder to control their problems then do the US mints. Thanks for the post, Later |

I love Die Cracks, everyman & his dog has the run of the mill coins, but not everybody has them with die cracks. Some are pretty plentiful, but I reckon they're still more interesting than a plain old coin!  |

Nice coins gnome,
there are a few in the ANS auction this month that I was thinking about bidding on. They are not as nice as the ones you have, these are pretty low grade, but some really neat die cracks. I must get to work on the way you grade over there, it is a little different.
I wonder how many coins were minted like yours before they realized it was cracked.

G'day Dave, I actually started a set of progressing diecracks on the 1926 6d's, but as usuall this fell by the wayside at the moment.I haven't got around to photographing them all at present.
You can also find some nice ones on the 1922 6ds. Will have to do some pics of those to show you.

Now that's a great looking coin, cracks all the way through the date are pretty neat, I have a few but not that pronounced.

Not a die crack but a nice find today at the Perth fair. The so-called 1933/32 halfpenny overdate.  |

I've heard of the 33/32 penny, didn't know there was a Half Penny overdate. Did you purchase it as the variety, or did the seller not know?
