I recently came across this 1942 s Mercury dime. I noticed that in the R of liberty, the west side of the cap, and the face, especially near the lips and chin, seemed to be doubled, along with a strange anomaly below the bust which is raised. I have done some looking around and research, and I cant find anything on any doubled 1942 s dimes. I was hoping someone would be able to help me out with determining whether or not I have any doubling going on, and what this anomaly is, whether it is PMD or something else!

Interesting. My first reaction was Machine Doubling, but the "R" doesn't say Machine Doubling to me. We'll see what others say

Don't think it's a doubled die,leaning towards worn die.

My first thought was machine doubled as well, bur you are right, there are areas that just dont match up with that. Thats why I believed it was a doubled die. It just looks too much like other examples I've seen. And what about this leads you to believe it is a worn die? Because I'm not too familiar at all with worn dies, so I dont really know what to look for! And any thoughts as to what that anomaly is? If I was to have to describe it, it would be as if a chunk of the design just got up and put itself there, it doesn't look like it belongs anywhere

Here are some closer pictures of that anomaly. And that semi-circle on the base of the bust is also raised, it is not an indent. I know that they might just be nothing, but if it is PMD, I dont know what would cause these. So any input as to what these two anomalies are would be appreciated a lot!

I suspect the rim near the bust point is due to damage. Metal got pushed around. You see it on the rim and bust too.
