I'm not sure what a contemporary counterfeit is, but these ALLEGEDLY were rolled about 50 yrs ago, and never touched, until I cracked them open.

Quote: Hesitant to deal with pros, due to the cons; It is difficult to say from the second picture - if you had to press me, I would say counterfeit since it appears to be a cast copy in the images. SSDD is correct, a scale that can show to 1/100th will be a diagnostic tool.

Thanks everyone for your input. I'm new to this, so coming across something like these is interesting to say the least. No the coins aren't worn, I do believe they are counterfeits, especially the 1917 (even though a 16 d would've made more sense). Either way problem solved, and no I'm not going to try to sell them, as legit anyway. Since the website I read about the counterfeits didn't even have a pic to show, they must be rare. Maybe someone will buy them as a novelty item... One more question, LoL, does anyone know if it's legal to sell them?

The Secret Service doesn't generally wander around confiscating people's counterfeits - some collectors specialize in fakes - but they could. The ANA had to obtain special permission to maintain a library of counterfeit coins.

Thanks Super Dave.. I knew they were technically illegal to possess, but I must say it's a decent find (NOT as decent as real deal obv) and someone, somewhere, always wants something. At the very least my 83 yr old neighbor (who gave the dimes to me) will get a kick out of all this. On another note I got my first 2014 dime today...I'm pretty sure it's real; but I guess you never know.

Any chance it's environmental damage? I have found a 1917D merc that looks a lot like that. Was found on a small island in the middle of a lake.

Haaa@bpoc1... Waxemm I don't think so. I'm leaning more towards cast. They are really good fakes though, they are the same in every respect except the weight. So I'm not sure, but I don't think so. I'm definitely gonna check into it more though.
