Yup. People do this kind of stuff for different reason, sometimes for fun, other times by accident, surprisingly also sell them as mint errors in this state, ebay has plenty of "Choice Rare Mint Error, Clipped Planchet Over 40% clipped, super rare" listings.

Yeah, this one is a definite PMD. But look out for other coins with genuine straight clips as straight clips exist.

How, in the minting process, could a coin come out with a straight clip? Isn't everything that cuts/punches a round shape?

Lots of straight edge clips exist. They happen when the planchet is punched over one of the edges of the metal strip.

If you ever see exposed zinc on any purported clipped Zincoln planchet error, that is a sure sign of PMD since the zinc blanks are punched before receiving the copper plating.

Yup...they do exist. Here is one I found a few months back CRH. Notice the rim near the clip and the date. You also can see the Blakesley Effect but it is minor.

All Zincolins have to be plated after punch or they would have zinc rims. Full plating is important on these coins to keep out any moisture or contaminates otherwise instant zinc rot.
