I thought it might be cool to see some collections that feature entire families. I received Julia Domna and Septimius Severus today which rounded out my (first two generations) collection of the Severan family. The first picture is them all together (lined up like the famous tondo :) ) and the second is them photographed separately since it was hard to get the dark Caracalla coin to look good with the silver other three.

I'm going to rephotograph the silver ones some time soon and get them looking right (so tough with overpolished silver coins) but I think the lighting I used brought out something a little different in them.

For anyone unfamiliar the Severan family ruled Rome through the beginning part of the Crisis of the Third Century. Septimius Severus seized power militarily after Commodus died. He had a relatively decent reign, earning the contempt of the Senate but being popular with the soldiers and common folk. He told his sons (Caracalla and Geta) to get along with each other and take care of the military, but as soon as he died they began fighting. Their mother (Julia Domna) attempted to reconcile them, but wound up having to watch in horror as Caracalla's men killed Geta. Caracalla would rule for another few years before being assassinated by a soldier while campaigning.

Have you seen this ancient family portrait of Septimius Severus and his family with Geta's face erased after his elimination by Caracalla?

What a loving family!

The article linked by Paul is curious ......

The (senior) Emperor is repeatedly referenced as Septimus Severus and mentioned as being different by virtue of having had facial hair (with the exclusion of M Aurelius). By my own count (Commodus, Pertinax, Didius Julianus,Pescennius Niger and Clodius Albinus) every single Emperor between Marcus and Septimius had whiskers ! For over 70 years if you count Marcus as Caesar and follow through to Caracalla every 'emperor' who was old enough to have a beard grew one. Only ending with Elagabalus and we know about him don't we .....
Then the writer states that Septimius "exited power" AD 198 apparently not realizing that Septimius and Caracalla were joint rulers for the next 13 years ?
Lastly is the mention that Geta died in "his brothers arms" ? Obviously he/she means in his mothers arms but it is rather a glaring error.
Interesting family portrait by the way. Just rather surprising that so many errors could be included in so short an article ! I would hope that the author was not a History Major ...... nor that they had spent more than a few minutes composing and researching it !

Pretty excited I finished this collection. There are some odds and ends of the dynasty I could add but I think I got the biggest players:

My next goal is the three emperors of the Flavian dynasty.
