Most of the coins you are showing from ebay listings are not cleaned, they are shiny, but they have cartwheel luster and are frosty.
Don't get the two mistaken.

You people definitely get me thinking about my coins.
I usually buy a coin just for the looks, and I've been happy about all of my purchases until I read this discussion.
So, I went and looked at all of my Peace dollars, and lo and behold I have one that has been harshly cleaned. Never noticed it before.

Don't judge them to harsh, since you did ask them for their opinion. You will learn alot on this forum. I know I do.
Thank you all for the your knowledge.

Welp, it's hard to break it to you guys... it sold on ebay for $42.00. If you look back up through this thread, you'll see that's the exact same amount I paid for it. I was left positive feedback buy the buyer. I stand by my statement that I paid fair market value. I believe I was correct in my assertion that you guys lowball items like this, because you want to be like the guy on Pawn Stars. I imagine that this coin would sell for around the same price over and over. Y'all should probably do more research on the market value of coins.

Yes, both raw (uncertified) and certified 1926S Peace $ are selling in the 42 +/- range on ebay. And NumisMedia FMV on a 26S in honest XF is in the 40 range. All true. Equally NGC Price Guide now says 37, down from 41 in December.

But saying break-even misses a lot of the economics of selling on ebay. Let's see...

You bought it for 42.14 here http://www.ebay.com/itm/1926-S-BU-P...231205321106

and sold it for 42.09 here http://www.ebay.com/itm/1926-S-Peac...321420462399

Out of that 42.09, it cost you $2-3 to ship it and eBay/PayPal ate 30% in fees so you cleared $26.50 or maybe $27. And as a new seller ebay will hold your funds at least 30 days.

But all in all, not a terribly expensive lesson - if you take it to heart.

Scottk, do you really think anyone here have an incentive to undergrade your coin, call it polished for no reason or give you an intentionally low value estimate?

Did anyone here offered you to buy the coin off you?

Some of us have been collecting Peace dollars for many years, buying and selling Peace dollars frequently.
I wouldn't rush into ignoring the advice here, even if you have found an uninformed buyer that paid you 42$ which made you lose only about 8$ on the coin ( ebay and Paypal together charge about 13% of the sell value). This could be a lot more in the future.

I was a first time seller, so ebay charged my a tiny amount. I wound up with about $40.67. I sold it because I wanted to see what would happen. I am new to coining. It seemed that everyone here just wanted to tell me that the coin was no good, and not worth much more that melt value. I was rather insulted. It appears that my lcs dealer told me right when he said I paid a fair price for it.

Honestly, it just peaves me a bit that cleaning or polishing a coin is so looked down upon. I really don't see the cause for cutting the value of a coin to near melt value because it has been cleaned or polished. This seems like a trendy sort of thing to me.

As a new (hoarder?) I don't see it really matter much except to "serious numismatists". I am not really interested in "coin collecting" as it is I guess. I'm more of a hoarding or stacking type of person. Just bought $2.40 fv of vf-au stuff for $43.00. I don't understand the appeal of paying tons of money for a certain coin because it has a double died mint mark.

Anyway, yeah.. there were plenty of people posting here telling me the coin was a sorry piece of ****, and that it was not worth what I paid. What matters to me in terms of value is how much I can sell it for, and as we know, that turned out to be the same price I paid for it, so... to a stacker/hoarder such as myself, there was no bad business decision.

Hope I hurt no one's feelings here. I certainly never intended to.

:)

You didn't wind up with $40.67... no that's only after subtracting the 3% Paypal fees. Not the 10% ebay fees that you still have to pay.

If you don't want to take anyone's advice, then fine, please continue living under a rock thinking what you wish to. I just want to let you know that there are hundreds of members on this website who have been numismatists for Decades and their opinion is a darn lot more valuable to anybody than yours.

Coins like you're hoarding are subject to silver fluctuations, silver drops to $10 per oz tomorrow what do you do? Sell your Peace dollars for $12 each that's what.

You didn't hurt anyone's feeling here. You just made yourself seem like an immature fool. You only hurt your own feelings.

I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed and a bit frustrated at how dense you are being right now.

I'm sorry that it had to be this way.

I am getting $40.67 transferred to my bank account. I don't know how it all works, but the buyer paid $42.13 US. I think there is a promotion going on with ebay right now that means your first 50 sales aee either free or very cheap.

Thanks for chiming in once again to tell me how much more you know about my money than I do. The proof's in the pudding. Give it a rest - the horse is dead.
