I dont have the best eye for grading but with a quick calculation it looks to be abou 10% over melt so I dont think you could get too burned at the current 336 price.

Buy PCGS and NGC slabbed coins until YOU are comfortable with you grading skills.

Most nice looking, unslabbed, key date coins on the internet or not slabbed because they won't make the grade or have been played with.

Yes, that's how I bought my 1853 $2.50 liberty head. Better keep buying that way

personally I think the ebay coin is a nice coin. Certainly worth more than 10% above melt imho. With that said though, as others mentioned, you are better off buying one that is slabbed...just for piece of mind that you found one that is authentic.

This one's a pretty good poster child for "I really don't trust the surfaces." Evan factoring in digital imagery and lighting variances, the surfaces are too homogeneous for me to be comfortable.

I see the point about the homogeneous surfaces being a possible indication of cleaning but overall I would be OK with this piece, at least at the current bid of $341. There are no heavy marks or obvious hairline scratches. Based on the light wear evident on the eagle's shoulder and on the headdress feathers it has AU detail. There would be no chance of a BU grade even if problem-free.

Of course, if you could find a similarly-priced coin in a PCGS, NGC, ANACS, or ICG AU slab that would be a better choice.
