You might be on to something here. I just checked NGC Coin Explorer, and the small letters variety does seem to have straighter (and slightly shorter?) leaves than the large letter variety.

Ah, the flying eagle, one of my favorite US coin designs. While not quite as lovely as some of your wonderful examples, I'm proud of this one. 1858 L.L.  See y'all again on Thursday, don't have an 1859 IHC myself.
