Carbon Spots On Nickels? - Coin Community Forum

XavierOfGreen Pillar of the Community United States 2589 Posts	Posted 05/13/2014 9:28 pm I have a superb looking uncirculated 1914 Nickel that I am thinking of sending out to get graded. It has maybe 2 contact marks on the reverse but thats it. One minor defect I noticed are a few extremly tiny dark specklike spots on the obverse. They either have to be the start of verdigris or carbon spots. I know early verdigris is potentially removable and carbon spots are not. But can nickels even get carbon spots? I thought they were just on cents and silver coins... Report this Post to the Staff

Many times they don't affect the technical grade when slabbed, but some collectors find that carbon spots reduce eye appeal (I am one of them). shermae Valued Member United States 259 Posts	Posted 05/13/2014 9:56 pm I find that the grading services seem to overlook many carbon spots as long as there has been no attempt to remove them. I've seen MS66 coins with carbon spots and tried to find one for my last post but didn't see one immediately. Report this Post to the Staff

shermae Valued Member United States 259 Posts	Posted 05/18/2014 3:54 pm Carl- I have a theory about a way to remove the spots without damaging the coin. It's a process that can work on stamps without even damaging the gum of mint stamps. The problem is, I would never test a highly graded coin and most "lowballs" are too worn to have any spots left! I want to test copper, nickel, and silver coins but need to figure out where to find inexpensive spotted and/or toned coins to work with. Report this Post to the Staff
