Just been emailed by a friend who has spotted a suspected dodgy seller on ebay.... He has two ID's....and all auctions are private ie. cannot see who is bidding. He reckons bids go up in small increments every time. Is there a place to discuss this/is it allowed? *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

How does he know he didn't spot a loyal customer?

I know of several who regularly sell on ebay.uk :( I always think that it's best that we know who they are rather than report them, as they are difficult to track if they keep changing their ID's.

Ok, I accept its difficult to tell if someone is being shillbidded. So all I will say is that angyart64 and come7undone10 are the same seller. Coins sent from differenet addresses, but paypal account the same. Not speculation, but a fact. Sells on ebay under ancient coins/artefacts and both are listed in Forum ancient coins forum as fake sellers ie. sell fakes. I hope I have been fair here as I have only stated facts which can be proved and maybe shouldnt have entitled the topic as shillbidders. my bad.

There are many shill bidders and con (people) on ebay. Also major ebay dealers who are knowingly selling counterfeit coins. Apart from the regular 1905 2/6's recent gluts of Northumberland 1/-'s,Gothic Crowns and 1864 die 4 florins. A group of us have actually established the far east manufacturers. Still ebay do jack about it. However, ebay is a great 24/7 resource and the majority of users are fantastic but there are rotten apples in every barrel.

very true, I am always wary of an auction where bidders ID is hidden.......and where that same eBayer has two accounts.

There is nothing inherently suspicious about having two ebay accounts, many people(including myself) have one for buying and one for selling.

Many people have several selling accounts. One for coins, one for stamps, etc.

Quote: Coins sent from differenet addresses, but paypal account the same. So he's a brick-and-mortar dealer with more than one physical location. I know ebay sellers - greatestateroadshow is one whom I know to be good - who does this, separate selling accounts for each physical location. Or, "he's" a partnership between individuals who both sell from their common Corporate account. Innocent, either way. Yes, it's an odd pattern which ought to show up on a smart collector's radar, but in and of itself isn't indicative of malice. Now, the Private Auction part, and the listing as a faker at Forum Ancient Coins, are both very telling facts (I trust that Forum) and deserve publicity.

My personal belief, based on 15 years on ebay, is that shill bidding is rampant and the offenders tend to be larger volume sellers vs. small to moderate-volume sellers. I am actually 85% complete on a white paper discussing the issue of shill bidding on ebay. I plan to contact the leadership team here on coin community forum to see what they're thoughts might be about suitability for this site.
