I found this in a roll of dimes today and tomorrow my father in law is going to look at it he had said he would like to have it sent out and graded. I have seen 2 others on this site already. Could anyone else give me answers.

Post mint damage. Most likely some sort of acid that reacts to Copper over nickle ate away at the center. There will be some copper in there still. otherwise it would split.

Something ate away at the copper.. Not an error, just damage.

That's what I had read on the this site before about acid. But there is distinct rounding on the pressed metal on the reverse side. I did some research last night and acid damage would make it more jagged . I found a sight listing a ton of error split planchet types. And as far as I can tell it look as it is a clipped small center planchet. But I could be wrong I don't have a good camera to take a photo that close.to show the rounding on the reverse side .

Has to be damage, most likely acid that ate away the copper. Dime planchets are punched from a large strip of already clad metal. There is no way to punch out a planchet that has a smaller diameter of copper in the center. It would be like using a cookie cutter to cut out the center of a ham sandwich, but make the ham smaller in diameter than the bread. I have never heard of a "clipped small center planchet", what does that mean, and what web site did you get that from?

The back side where the copper is missing the most of its self is folded over and it has no border but the rest of the coin dose and it's to smooth for it to have been ground down it doesn't have the really small scratches that should be a percent . So I don't know
