I don't post often but view this site daily. Anyway, I am going to the Philadelphia Mint for the first time and wanted to know if anyone had any tips or things that I should make sure I don't miss when there. Thanks
The Philadelphia mint exhibits were just recently renovated and it's much better than it used to be. I would plan a visit during the week because on Saturday they may not be working and there may not actually be any coins being minted that day. It may be the same case during the week too, you just never know when they'll actually be working.
Make sure to check out the Tiffany mosaics. They were originally in the old mint (3rd Mint building)and were brought over to the new mint in 1971 under Mary Brooks' direction.
I've actually never been to the Philadelphia mint, so you will get better advice from those who have. Hopefully they will post soon.
Call beforehand or email them. It wouldn't hurt. I went to the Mexico City Mint and Numismatic Museum. It was closed the day I went for renovations. Still on my to-do list, so maybe next time I'll check out San Luis Potosi instead.
They used to have a collection of some older clad coins near the entrance. They were rather remarkable because they had actually chosen Gems for display. Every other collection I've seen, even in the Smithsonian, were inferior coins.
