My how time flies! It was a busy summer. I found quite a number of interesting checks and the like at the Great American Stamp Show in Hartford, CT last month. I'm only now getting around to sorting through them. wasn't expecting to find anything older than the 1815 check I picked in the spring -- but I did! Remember that 1815 check I posted a while back? Well, I found one eve older -- a nice 1792 check from the Bank of the United States for more than $1000. Pretty large sum for that era. If anyone can identify the signature I'd like to know who it was from. There were also several nice engraved checks, including one from Central City, CO in 1885. This one from Skagway, Alaska is quite plain, but at that time the 1899 gold rush was still going strong. This one just amused me. And lastly, a county warrant from Silver City, Idaho. I have a personal connection to this one because I visited Silver City a few years back. Today it's an amazing ghost town.

After looking at some of these examples, I realized that I just might have some very interesting pieces, procured through my stamp "collection buying" years ago. I never really put any "buying value" on them at the time, but certainly will go back through my stacks for a look see.
Thanks for jogging my memory ...

I wish I could find more old checks with engraved vignettes, but they seem to have gotten more expensive and more elusive. Here's one I managed to pick up for a reasonable price.

Fans of U.S. Treasurer Francis Spinner usually know of his association with Mohawk Valley Bank as cashier. They might look at this check and think, "too bad it doesn't have a Spinner signature." But they'd be wrong. This check was issued to and endorsed by Peter B. Spinner, brother of Francis. Peter never gained national attention, probably because his autograph is not nearly as interesting.

A nice check for $10,000.00 in GOLD I think I might try to cash it. Has a RN-L10 revenue - slightly unusual -

Just before Christmas I obtained this lovely remainder check from the National Bank of Athens (GA). Pre-signed, but never issued. Very colorful and both vignettes are terrific. Happy to add this one to my collection!

I found two nice checks at the FUN coin show in Orlando last month. The first is actually a promissory note. The building in the upper left is the New York Merchants Exchange, built in 1841. It still exists on Wall Street, though it's been greatly modified. The Sisson & Chapman check includes a portrait of singer Jenny Lind. She was quite famous in her day and was nicknamed the Swedish Nightengale.
