They were punched with stamps bearing Chinese characters by merchants to check their silver content. We already mentioned this in other posts too; it is called an 8-reales coin not a dollar. It did circulate along the dollar until the mid-1800s, but an 8 reales is an 8 reales. Report this Post to the Staff
