Here is my very first Certified ancient coin out of my Celtic collection of mostly UK Celtic coins. Its a gold Ambiani Stater graded XF..not sure what they mean by ....it. smoothing.... but its a brand new slab from NGC..I know these coins get faked a lot but I bought it from Chris Rudd a couple yrs ago so I wasnt worried about that ....I will probably get a few more certified by NGC..These coins were used to pay for the war against Julius Caesar in Gaul in the 1st century BC so they are commonly known as Gallic War Staters..I love this coin but I'm going to sell it anyways on ebay where I have a site...mirrortree....I really love ancient Celtic coins and I havent posted in this area of CCF for over a year but its nice to be back in the ancient world again..Im watching Game Of Thrones a lot these days and so I guess I'm in the ancient modality and this is a war related coin.....

Excellent example. If you plan on selling it leave it in the slab. If not crack it out

Quote: not sure what they mean by ....it. smoothing.... I believe it's "Lt. smoothing", as in, "light smoothing". Smoothing is a mild form of tooling: if a coin's background fields are damaged (by corrosion, or perhaps by a careless trowel as it is being dug up), the person cleaning the coin may decide to "smooth" out the damage. It is most usually done on Roman sestertii or similar large bronze coins, which are prone to ugly pitting and scarring in the fields.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

thankyou moderators for your excellent comments....Lt or Light smoothing makes more sense for sure..i knew it had to have something to do with cleaning which is why the coin is rated 2/5 surface value...but it is a gorgeous example of a very interesting type. Even a Roman coin collector would want this one....you would have to sympathize with the Gauls(Celts)tho.....they made very unusual coins....quite unromanlike

oh yes..i also want to say I believe the reason the coin has a blank side is that the Celts didnt want to recognize any particular leader and were trying to unify themselves out of their traditional tribal divisions to fight the Romans who were of course united under Caesar...... and many of these coins found their way to England and the disjointed horse design was used by several tribes after the invasion for a short time

also I wanted to say that I believe the blank side of the coin indicates the fact that no particular leader was in charge of the unified Celtic tribes in their doomed effort to thwart Caesars invasion of their tribal homelands ....although their were, of course, notable chiefs involved especially Vercingetorix who is considered the ultimate Celtic Leader of the Gauls in this Gallic war period of 1st century BC

Very cool coin ... I am interested in forming a celtic collection myself but so far I only have a single celtic coin. An Iceni half unit. I really love the abstract and unique style of celtic coins.

@jimbo 777...interesting coin..are you sure its iceni? I dont see it listed in my ABC book by Rudd and Associates.....the left image definitely is a boar..not sure about the right side..The Boar image is similar to other iceni coins but the right side is different..It could very well be iceni..Im no expert...I have several of the iceni moon coins which are easy to find. If you want to build a great collection I would suggest Chris Rudd, or Silbury Hill Coins.......eBay can be tricky but as long as the Seller is established you can do well..Forum coins is also very good. I love my Celtic collection..England is my home country so I prefer UK Celtic coins but I also have some nice European Celtic coins which are a lot older. Celtic Coins were only produced in the UK for about 150 yrs before the roman invasion ended it....so they are considered much more rare and exist only in small quantities and are therefore more expensive....The ABC book by Chris Rudd is the definitive guide to British Celtic Coinage and well worth the price....

@jimboo77 I went through the Rudd Ancient British Coins aka ....ABC book designs and your coin looks like it could be iceni similar to ABC 1582 or 1585 or corieltauvi ABC 1797..like I said the left image is definitely a Boar but the right image looks like a horse or a bird with some kind of inscription on the bottom..could be a rare uninscribed type ie... a new variety

Just out of interest, when you buy a coin from Chris Rudd, does it come with an authentication certificate, or is is just the NGC slab that certifies it?

@pishpash ...I had the gold ambiani coin slabbed just recently.. Chris Rudd sells only raw coins and he and his associate Liz Cottam publish an online cat every month or so with new Celtic coins which they have acquired from collections or even met dets that they buy from..They provide all the legal paperwork to go along with shipments out of the UK and all the coins are authentic..They are ,in my opinion, the best and most reasonably price firm in the celtic coin business....their online cat alone is a mine of information.....

Cassidy77, sorry for the late reply I have been sick with the flu and haven't logged on. It was sold to me as Iceni but have not researched it in detail. Will see what I can find out and get back to you.
