I would like to know your opinion on these two guys. Do they look to be authentic, and what would you value these at? Thanks for looking. Septimius Severus Trajan

Septimus is opening at $60 and Trajan at $75. I am seriously considering buying them both.

That's pretty close to what they are worth. I wouldn't go too much higher.

I concur that the price is a bit high. But the Septimius is making direct reference to his activity in the "wild and woolly" regions in the North. For this alone it should attract some interest. Especially if it is datable to his final year when he expired in York.

Good comment furious, but if the seller doesn't point this out then it will sell as a general denarius of this emperor, not all collectors do their homework. ie 20-30 gbp.

Checking my handy Sear reference
"This and the following three types, refer to Roman successes in the military campaigns in northern Britain beyond the provincial frontier."
The year given for this issue is AD 210 (Sear 6385 RIC 335). As Septimius expired in Eboracum (York) Feb 4, 211 it would not be an exaggeration to call it a last year issue. In fact Sear does not seem to attribute any specific types to AD 211 at all ! The price given is $80 in VF (2002 edition) which does not really mean that much since some prices move in different directions. But the fact that it has BRIT on both obverse and reverse certainly adds some appeal. Especially to the "Brits"! The Trajan (Sear 3139) is to me a $30-40 coin (Sear gives $65 in VF). The reverse FORT RED (Happy days Are Here Again) is one of the more common types on 2nd & 3rd century coinage. But Trajan may have been the first to use this reverse type. I don't recall it on any predecessors coins. Personally I think something more 'militaristic' or personal to him would be a better choice for Trajan, as he was famous for expanding the empires frontiers. Sending the 'boys' into Mesopotamia (Iraq) may not have been the best idea he ever had and Hadrian later had sense enough to withdraw them once he became emperor. Serving in the Roman Legions in 120 degree plus heat must have made guarding the northern frontier of Britain sound like paradise.

This is what the seller has to say about it :-
[Issued to commemorate victory in Britain. Between 208 and 210 A.D. Septimius Severus and his son Caracalla campaigned into Scotland (then Caledonia) and restored Hadrian's Wall. The victories in the north pacified the island for the remainder of the century, but the aged Septimius died at Eburacum (York) in 211 A.D.]
.........................
I wonder how many legionaries 'expired' due to the heat when in Iraq, must have been a fair few..

Well I did not get either one of these. Prices for both went well above the starting bids. No biggie though, I will save that money for the Raleigh Money Expo in July.

Well above the starting bid of $75 for the Trajan denarius makes me question the sanity of the bidders.
