Ancient-Coin-Of-Some-Type-Or-A-Fake?

Ancient-Coin-Of-Some-Type-Or-A-Fake?

I bought this on the streets of Madrid for a few pesetas, so I don't hold much hope for it being genuine.
The diameter is about 22mm and it is very thin
Any info on what it is (or what it is trying to be?)

The coin is real and appears to be the Roman emperor Claudius II 268-270 AD.

I agree it is Claudius II and almost certainly genuine. Not worth a whole lot but a dealer would get $10 at the least .....
Maybe $15 on a 'good' day

BTW the coin is called an "antoninianus" (named after emperor Caracalla whose real name was Antoninus and introduced a 'new' denomination in the early 3rd century. The coin was valued as a 'double denarius' although the weight was only 1.5 of the denarius. The third century saw a rapid decline in the silver content of these coins and what had started as about 75% silver declined to about 5% by the time of Claudius II. The imperial mints were running 24/7 and these types are very common. I cannot read the reverse legend and it may be somewhat 'blundered'. The last 3 letters should be A V G (Augustus) but the A looks more like a backwards N. I can see the figure holding a scale and my guess is it reads EQVIT AVG. The scales being a universal symbol of equity.

Correction ......

Coin reads LIBERT AVG (Libertas holding scepter and pileus)

It looks poor, but it looks genuine, rather than fake.

Most of the Antoninianii of the brilliant but beleaguered Claudius II are of this low grade, a major problem carried over from the previous reign of Gallienus.

Occasionally you do find some better examples, such as this Silvered one I sold last year, RIC V, I, Rome 98
