I do not collect coins, but this was given to me. I believe it to be roman. My question is, is it even real? If so, some info on it would be great. Thanks!

It's Roman, I SUSPECT a double denarius of the emperor Carinus? this was circa AD 283-285. Weigh it, does it weigh about 4 grams give or take a little bit? Good luck

It is a Roman coin of the emperor Carausius 286-293 AD. He was a rebel emperor that ruler from Britian. The type is an Antoninianus.

It's Carausius, the British usurper.

I'm not sure if it's real, though. Somewhere in the back of my mind I recall seeing a fake Carausius antoninianus with this same or a similar crack in the flange.

I'll do some research to see if I can find it online. I'm not 100% sure about this, so don't write it off as not authentic yet.

Thats supposed to be a silver cion of Carausius (he was the only person to issue actual silver coinage for a century). However, this Usurper couldnt issue them forever - only a very limited few coins were issued in silver, and they are worth a lot. This is a copy, probably a Westair one with the letters WRL filed off.

Another example:

Carausius is very popular because he took Britainf rom the Romans (and issued some really interesting coinage). He's listed as being quite rare, but in Britain his issues turn up all the time (usually the later coppers, almost always of the PAX AVG design...though other stuff turns up relatively frequently - I've had 3 unique issues from him). The PAX AVG can be had cheaply.
