I understand where people are coming from on the 'takes jobs away from people' angle, really. But how about this side of things. My Walmart has 22 registers, including the express lanes. However it doesn't have the manpower to have more than half of them open at any given time. So even with manned lanes removed, no one loses their job to the machines. And this location is a 24 hour supercenter that has even less staff for the night shift, from midnight to 6am or so, there's never more than two registers open at the absolute maximum. Add in the number of 24 hour factories in my area, with people going to Walmart after they get off the clock at night, and it's not uncommon to spend 30-45 minutes in line for 1 item, even at 10:30 when I get off the clock at my job. The self checkout machines, while not popular with most people, have effectively resolved the long wait times and made in-and-out trips that much faster for people, at this location at least.

I think it's a good sign that the self-checkout machines accept half dollars and dollar coins, but in some ways that would defeat the purpose of using them. If we want to get exposure for these coins, put them in circulation, and provide teachable moments for cashiers and people around us, we're going to have to give half dollars and dollar coins to a real person and not a machine. At the same time though, someone in the Walmart hierarchy must know these coins are being spent to have machines accept them!

If you really want to freak-out a cashier, pay with two dollar bills!

I had the chick at Menards get out the counterfeit detector pen and stripe the $2's I gave here as if I would make fake $2's instead of a $100's if I was that good

A couple of weeks ago, I went to a local McDonald's and dumped some Kennedy half dollars. The young lady at the drive-thru called her manager, because she had never seen a Kennedy half. I saw an opportunity to help educate the young lady and informed her that these were half-dollar "fifty cent pieces." Her manager (a gentleman in his mid/late 30's) told me that I was wrong, these were silver dollars. I interjected politely, but he smiled and said he's seen 'lots' of these silver dollars. He was rude about it and directed the cashier to ring-up the 'silver dollars.' I thanked the young lady and asked her to read the back of the coin after she gave me my order. So... win-win. I got to educate a young adult and got my lunch at half price.

Later, the drawer came up short and the cashier was yelled at.

And they take halves and dollar coins!

And I'll bet they take $2 bills as well. I take it, they are the machines where you put the change in the machine "below" the scanner? Because, one of my Walmart managers told me that they were new machines, and that was why they took halves. The only think I tried that nearly jammed the machine, but the store people had to open the machine up, to get it back, when I tried an Ike large dollar coin. Also, if you try a half in the machines like at my local Meijer store, that has the change insert above the scanner, they fit halves perfectly, but they still fall through the machine, into the rejection tray.

The only problem is, that the machines should have been made to dispense halves instead of two quarters, and $2 bills instead of two $1 bills.

I started givng my young nephew Ikes when he was really young, and he called them "big quarters" so whenever I gave him halves, I told him they were "medium quarters" and golden dollars were "gold quarters" and with SBAs, I ran out of ideas, so I just told him they were "Carter Quarters" because that was the name of the president who signed the bill into law, even though I'm sure as young as he was, he didn't understand much of it.

My nephew will spend his $2 bills, but will not dare spend his big, and medium quarters.

Most likely not in this case, she did the right thing and called the manager and then he messed up and told the cashier to take them as dollars. so it's actually all on him as she merely did what employees are supposed to do and did what the guy in charge told her to do.

One thing about those machines at Walmart is that they constantly are broken. It's really annoying. Or someone with a FULL cart tries to use self check out. So frustrating...

I would not shove a half in those things, they get jammed with 13 dimes to buy a loaf of bread!

They suck, them things take jobs away from people

well the way most cashiers act, they shouldnt have jobs until they get old enough to be the greeter at Walmart anyway! Walmart is great so long as you don't have to deal with the employees, so these machines are a treasure!
