Hello all,

Is the following coin genuine and if so what is it worth today?

I think it is a silver antoninianus (hope this is right).
Weight is 5.4 grams and test around 75% silver with a spectrometer.

Gordian-III-Silver-Coin

Gordian-III-Silver-Coin

Any assistance and values will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike.

Yes it is a real coin of Gordian III. This is a silver Antoninianus with the reverse of PROVID AVG. I would give it a grade of EF and a value of $40-$50.

It looks genuine but have not seen one this heavy. I know some of the Gordian coins are quite large.

Nice, a spectrometer reading, my love of ancient coins and materials science background colliding at last haha. It's heavier than most, but I have a 5.1 g example so it's not that far off and it's unlikely someone would fake one of these anyway.

At 5.4 grams it's really not that far off.

There are some nice genuine Gordian 111 antoninianii over low 5 grams weight out there, but they are few and far between.
On pictures presented here, I see no reason to doubt this coin.
I will have a look at the VCOINS site; there are usually lots of Gordian 111 coins to be had.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I found one only, at 5.48 grams; most typically weigh in at around 4.6 grams
