As far as dollar coins go, I'd much prefer them over paper. Heck, I'd much rather have $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, $100 (yes, all the way to the Full Union) coins and forgo the bills. The only issue with the dollar coins is their size and their color (which looks really nice when fully uncirculated, but add a little circulation to it or leave it sit out in the open for too long and that god awful tarnish color appears). They'd be better larger and copper-nickel clad like the Ike's. Give them some weight, they are a dollar after all...a dollar should have weight.
The arguments about weight are just crazy. The country dealt in large size dollars up to 1935, and then for some time after. We can do it again. There's no reason to have hundreds of dollar coins on your person at once, the same as there's no reason to have hundreds of singles on your person at once. Once you get 5+ dollar coins it's time to make a bank-run. Heck, if you wanted, once you'd get 2+ coins you could make a bank-run.
Sure, there would be times (like the parking pass example) when you'd get a glut of them at once, but how often do you pay with cash and get back a ton of ones? It's happened to me once this year, and by a "ton of ones", I got 5 instead of one $5 bill. When it happens, you gotta deal with it.
As far as it catching on, not likely. People don't know their currency anymore. Young kids today not even knowing about 50 cent pieces of dollar coins, or those that do either think we no longer make them or only know of some of them (took some dollar coins back to a Chase bank two months ago, the teller, a younger girl, took the golden ones no question but the Anthony dollars? She looked each one over, spending half a minute or so on each one, before accepting them). People like their little plastic cards. People like their paypal (sure, paypal is nice). People like the "cash-back" scam (come one, it's a scam to get people to go into credit card debt). People like their banknotes and dislike coins since the dollar's practically worthless (of course, the numbers who like banknotes are falling).
You all hear of Israel's idea of all digital currency? Since hard (in this sense, physical) currency is the genesis of crime and tax evasion, their idea calls for abolishing it and going all digital so crime and tax evasion could theoretically not occur. How soon before other nations would follow suit if Israel goes through with it?
Basically, I see it this way, coins are nice but convincing a populace to accept them or use them as opposed to their precious plastic...I don't see if happening unless something happens to render modern technology obsolete and render old-school stuff current (as in, pick your favorite apocalypse scenario)

You know the best part about Canada havening 1 and 2 dollar coins, a lot of us take some or all of our pocket change and put it in a so called piggy bank and then check it and bank it. Well with 1 and 2 dollar coins it adds up really fast. Nice. :)

Quote: They would be better off bringing back the 2 dollar bill! Never knew they stopped them. I can get them at my bank anytime. No one wants them. People just don't know about them, could care less. Most people I know hate the dollar coins. As already noted, who wants to carry around a lot of coins? Same reason the Half Dollar is fading away. Same reason people don't use large Dollar coins like the Ike. Don't know why this even comes up so often. At most stores, gas stations, etc. all I see is Credit, Debit cards and checks today. Soon enough you'll hear some kid say "Hey granpa, what is that stuff you people USED to use called cash?"

@ just carl - My memory is a little hazy, but the $2 bill was discontinued around 1966, reintroduced in 1976, and has been printed on and off ever since. I recall reading an article that new 2014 $2 bills will be entering circulation shortly.

Umm, Quote: There's no reason to have hundreds of dollar coins on your person at once, the same as there's no reason to have hundreds of singles on your person at once. Who say's there is NO reason? Another person forcing their view points on others. Well this is America and you can say, (well, not really), what you want to but to make a broad statement like that... Besides, think of how performance artists would feel having coins thrown at them all day/night long for tips! Just might end up with a battery charge ag'inst you!

Also the 2 most commonly found substances on the US $1 bill are cocaine and Blood, do away with it, save tax money, for the coin into common usage. no brainer. this is just another example of how big business runs America.

I made some of the comments a bit friendlier for young eyes. Carry on.

Dollar coins make sense but they need a new composition and design unlike anything produced before to stand out. The Sacagawea dollars were widely used where I live when they first came out. People spent them. As soon as the dollar coins turned an ugly color, no one wanted to carry them or use them. -MV

It won't matter by the time they make any changes. Coins and bills will both be obsolete before any substantive changes are made.

This discussion keeps on coming up over and over again and still people need to "Hold On" to obsolete coinage and notes for circulation. It is funny that most of the rest of the World has dumped their 1 and 2 cent coins and replaced the low denomination Bills with coins. I often wonder if it is Nostalgia , Stubbornness or Stupidity that is the driving force to keep the 1 cent, $1 and $2 bills in circulation. Anyway "Carry On" , as I always get a giggle out of some of the reasons whey these should be retained in circulation

Perhaps I am being optimistic when I said "late 2015" in the poll. But I still firmly believe that it will happen someday, despite the American public and government resisting any change. Eventually people will come to their senses. I just hope it happens in my lifetime.
I ask for $2 bills at the bank most of the time. I received a series 2013 in the latest group of bills. I did not realize there was any series 2013 being printed. I saved this one because it was crisp.

Think how they will feel when there are no more ones but plenty of two dollar bills for tips. What I find interesting is how the plight of how the performance artists will receive tips is always so foremost in the minds of those who are against discontinuing the dollar note. I have to wonder are they just cheap, or do they know some performance artists real well?
