The seller of this coin 251551729675 has a series of other AU58's listed in auctions on ebay. In each case, he quotes the MS60 price for the given date.

I guess my Hyundai would seem really cheap if I told you how much a mid-sized Benz costs. Can anyone explain the strategy here?

All he needs is one person to make that mistake and place a bid.

Not a big price jump from AU-58 to MS-60, but I don't think his statement of value for an MS-60 example is very accurate.

There is a school of thought that an AU58 is a lovely coin, perhaps an MS65 or better marred by a tiny bit of wear, even just cabinet friction. While an MS60 is, although mint state, a dog.

Or jhp2104 is right and hope springs eternal...

It's called the American way. He can ask whatever he wants for the coin. Now, whether anyone purchases it or not is anyone's guess. If one person bites, he's golden. Strategy works providing someone is interested enough.

It's not Just the AMERICAN way my friend.

It's been going on a lot longer then this Country has been established.

BStrauss- I love AU58 coins and consider nice ones the next step below MS64. They usually have nicer surfaces than MS63's. The challenge is finding them, and then finding the nice ones. Slabbed are great- hopefully a proper grade and you can pick/choose coins that meet your requirements. But raw, well, very few sellers have raw AU58's. Either the coins are XF-AU53 or but being offered as AU55, or they are close to AU58 but offered as "Gem-BU." It's an adventure.

That's a nice 15D! Lot's of collectors will go for an AU-58 coin since they are usually VERY nice.
