I have a box of 5 PL sets from 1966 that has never been opened, it's exactly the way it was shipped from the mint to my great uncle who I inherited it from.
I would like to check for Small Beads dollars but Charltons 2014 shows none for PL, does that mean it would be pointless to open the box and check ?
Also, is there enough potential value to leaving the box unopened versus opening it ?
I am fairly certain it contains 5 PL sets since the other boxes just like it that were opened from the 60's had 5 sets in them, although it might be dollars only because there are some unboxed envelopes from early 60's with only dollars in them.
Looking for opinions please.

There are no small beads in PL sets.
IMO if you're not absolutely certain what's in the box then by all means go ahead and open it.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

Oh I'm a fan of those boxes. They don't carry any sort of premium for being in the original shipping packaging, but its a nice novelty. I've had a few customers that get giddy over the idea of having that bit of RCM provenance.

Only $2.09 to mail 25 PL sets in 1963. Looks like the original cost was $6.00/set in 1963.
