Looks like the real deal. Incomplete planchet. Nice find.

I agree with the curved clips theory.

it was a find but not really.. I found it a flea market in a huge box of loose junk coins I looked through for about a hour the owner thought it was PMD because he only heard of curved clips. when I went to pay for it he pulled out a box of more clips including a 1851 US Large Cent.

I would call those curved clips, not straight clips.

Two curved clips. The concave profile is visible on both.

Two straight clips can only occur on a coin in one instance- a blank punched from the corner of a metal stock sheet. That would result in two straight edges at a right angle with the sheet end edge usually rough or ragged.

It's not the Flea market in Mt Dora is it? Renegars or how ever you spell it?

Also, I do plan on going to the Summer FUN show if I can.

I really didn't want to post that in the section you asked me so I thought I'd add it to one of Your threads.

no its one of the ones in Belleview fl (market of marion) there are like 6 of them in a few mile radius. I go a hour or so each direction from central Florida to random ones some hit and alot more miss. I never been to Renninger's Farmers and Flea market in Mt Dora but it sounds like a nice weekend road trip.

It's a nice way to spend a day. Good people, nice area, good food.

I haven't been able to go in 2 years but my wife and I would go there every weekend just to stroll about and talk to the vendors.

I don't think it should have changed that much.

Part of it is air conditioned too so you can escape the heat when needed.

All clips curve to some degree because of the way the metal flows. The difference between a curved and straight clip is this. A straight clip is caused by the planchet being punched off the edge of the sheet. A curved clip is caused by the planchet being punched off the edge of the previous hole.

Nice find! I suspect the clips were more curved before struck--and that metal flow has changed the curve?
