After starting my Wheat set I read a couple of interesting facts. The Lincoln Penny was the first coin to depict a real person. That started a trend for later, as all our US coins and currency now depict former Presidents. It was very controversial at the time, partly because George Washington himself refused to allow the Federal mint to use his image. In that era only certain Colonial coins were minted using his likeness and without his permission. |

I would think the absolute minimum would be 12 varieties (20 if you consider the Satin finish to be a different variety), 20 varieties probably much more likely, and potentially a maximum of 24 varieties (32 if you consider the Satin finish to be a different variety). (3 groups) Odds are good they will do 1,2 and either 3,4 or 5,6 plus either 7 or 8. They might do both 7 & 8. (5 or 6 groups) And they just might do all 8 groups. I've thought abo suggesting to the Mint a Lincoln Bicentennial Set of all 32 varieties. 32 cents in one holder and sell it for $19.95 Cost them $3.50 to make, $16.50 profit. |

Largely replaced by pickled presidents when you consider they have to mint one Sac for every 5 presidents.

Well, that is good that you don't notice or "shake in your boots" about the slight loss from rounding up or other countries being bothered by it. Just adds up. Take $40 per year per person...how many adults live in the US? That's a big number. Government will thank you for your additional contributional for there "congressional spending" package since the little change doesn't matter. Just think, of the number..just take 1 million people times $40 a year, 1 years time that is $40 million dollars. 1 Million people is so small compared to the US population. You must really REALLY appreciate our government. Do you work for them? :P

They have been talking about getting rid or stopping the cent for well over 25 years that I know of. it was going to be stopped in the 70"s then the 80's here we are in the 00's and good old Abe is still kicking. get used to him he is here to stay.

As much as the cent is important numismatically, I think it's a vestigial currency. It can't be cost-effective to keep making them, no matter what they're made out of. Most people I know throw pennies away or leave them in jars on the counter. I've been called a "penny-pincher" more than once, but I never take actual pennies, just electronic ones! Anyway, the Half Cent was discontinued, I doubt there was an outcry. Life would go on, and all the pennies in our collection would suddenly become more interesting, just like 2c and 3c pieces are now. |

How about keeping the cent as a NCLT piece that they make every year in sets etc. like the French did for the 1 Centime coins?

eh I like searching cents I do sometimes look through nickles and dimes and have a handfulls of silver eh pennies are still better never know what ya will find! might find a dime!! lol

My son makes 800 pennies an hour working at the hamburger factory. Over 13 pennies per minute. The lawyers from patent law firms I have worked with typically bill their time at $300.00/hr. I know that is outrageous, but it is industry standard. That is 30,000 pennies per hour, 500 per minute. I understand the Lincoln cents are a wonderful series and great to collect, but they are not useful in the economy any more and waste everyone's time counting them out. quote:

Yes, I REALLY appreciate our government. We all work for it. Our taxes pay for the interstates, bridges, military, and schools. We have a duty to pay our fair share of taxes to maintain and improve the infrastructure that our parents, grandparents and those before them worked so hard to provide to us. |
