Since the US mint has slated August 16 as being the date when the Jefferson dollars come out, it got me thinking about the companion First Ladies gold piece.

I haven't heard when these pieces are going to be released. I was curious to know if anyone has heard anything yet about a release date?

I think the Jefferson First Lady Uncirculated coin is going to be one to watch.

There are a few reasons why I believe it may be one of the few winners in that series.

1. Jefferson's wife died before he became the third president of the US. So his First Lady coin is going to feature a design on the obverse that was used while he was president. I believe this is going to be a more popular image since it will feature a recycled image, with modifications rather than a First Lady we are unfamiliar with.

2. The release of the first two First Lady coins sold out in under 4 hours. Looking at gold commemorative mintages over the last 10 years, there is a definite pattern. Proof mintages are far greater than uncirculated mintages. Out of a 40,000 production limit, how many will be uncirculated rather than proof? Since we don't know what the mintages are for the first two coins, we can only assume the proofs will out number the uncirculated.

3. When I think of first ladies, I only remember the ones who stuck out in history. Elenore Roosevelt, Hillary Clinton, and Jackie Kennedy are some of the most well known first ladies in history, Most of the first ladies I know are from the 20th century, not the 19th. Does anyone know who Thomas Jefferson's wife was? I certainly don't, but I am more likely to purchase a coin with a design I am familiar with.

My prediction is this one will sell out in an hour or two, but the real story will be the prices it will fetch in a secondary market.

I'm curious to hear other opinions about this upcoming coin. Will it be the coin everyone is talking about, or will it fall flat?

Lastly, does anyone think I spent too much time pondering these questions?

Rest in Peace

As an old United States History teacher, I can provide a few answers.

These are coming from memory, and may not be 100 percent accurate.

Jefferson married Martha Skelton in the early 1770's. They were both in their 20's. History was nearly changed because following their honeymoon they returned to Monticello in a carriage, through one of the worst snow storms in Virginia history. Even though they bogged down, they luckily made it to Monticello.

They were married for 10 years. She was very pretty and loved music, as did Jefferson.

She was probably weakened by seven pregnancies, and became ill. Jefferson told her he would never remarry, and he didn't. When she died, Jefferson stayed in his room for nearly a month, and it was many weeks before he returned to his normal lifestyle.

It is believed that Jefferson had two "romances" after Martha died. One was with Maria Cosway who was a beautiful artist, and the other with Sally Hemings, a slave. Hemings was a slave whose mother was black, and father was white. The father was Jefferson's father-in-law, and so Hemings was Martha Jefferson's half sister. Jefferson's affair with Sally lasted nearly 40 years, and he is believed to have fathered several children with her.

So much for that. Fairly accurate I hope.

I also am eager to discover the date the Jefferson first spouse coin will be sold by the mint. I have checked with the Mint's on-line site, but can't find a sale date. Should anyone know the date and time, I surely would like to know.

One thing you need to remember is that there are 3 more "liberty"s coming up. It may turn out to be the most minted, therefore least valuable, if they use the same design on all 4....

They won't use the same design on all of them, they are to use a design depicted on a coin circulated during that president's term in office.

Between Jefferson, Van Buren, Jackson, and Buchanan's Liberty design, I would think that Jefferson's Liberty would be a more desirable coin.

I just checked CoinWorld online and the heading is as follows:

Jefferson First Spouse coin launch now Aug. 30

The launch date for sales by the United States Mint of the 2007-W Thomas Jefferson Liberty First Spouse gold $10 coins has been bumped back two weeks, to noon Eastern Daylight Time Aug. 30.

I wish they hadn't used the Classic head for both of the non-first spouse coins next year. They are too similar. I would have liked to have seen one of them use the Capped Bust motif so that all four coins would have noticeably different obverses.

Probably for the same reasons why the first two came out late.

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the community and just saw the post related to the 1st Spouse Jefferson coin.

I missed the boat on ordering the Washington and Adams coins but have a few questions for those that were able to order

-Was the 5 limit per household limited to 5 total or are you allowed to order 5 proof and 5 uncirculated?
-Is it easier to get through on the phone or on the internet (if by phone, do the phone lines open exactly at noon or can you call a minute before noon and get through)
-Finally, what is the correct phone number? 1-800-872-6468 or 1-800-672-6468 as posted on another forum

I just spoke to someone at the mint and they did say it would not be released on the 16th but would not give me a date other than it would be pushed back a couple of weeks which leads credence to the August 30th date. I also asked about the phone number and they told me 1-800-872-6468 was the correct number.

Thanks in advance.

The correct phone number is 1-800-872-6468 or 1-800-USA-MINT. I'm not too sure on the limit, I didn't have a chance to order any.
