I heard a rumor that they were going to stop minting the Lincoln cents before long. Anyone know anything about that?

Rumors come and go. Remember Y2K? So until the mint says they are going to quit, we should assume that things will continue with what ever they have to do. 2009 would be the 100 years of the Lincoln Cent. So I would not think they would stop before then. They have to just keep coming up with a cheaper method to make Cents to keep them profitable for them. They will do what ever they think will keep coin collectors interested. All the new programs for you to hang onto the coinage they put out. So time will tell.

If mintage is stopped, it won't be before 2009 since the multi-coin commem program will be that year. 2010 and beyond, who knows...

If congress is going to make a decision to eliminate the cent, they had better do it soon. If another bill to eliminate the cent passes through the House, it will probably take a while before it gets to the Senate. Most likely the bill will expire before the Senate acts on it. The same thing has happened in the past when it came to adding 6 territories to the State Quarter Program. The most recent bill to prolong the State Quarter program is still hanging in limbo between the House and the Senate. Although I doubt it will pass in the Senate. I think congress would sooner find an alternative metal for the cent, before they choose to eliminate it.

It is not a priority, look how few dollar coins you find in circulation compared to $1 dollar notes, despite the production cost and life of the dollar. Cents are a Sacred Cow, and the public will howl if they are taken away.

The government could save a lot more money eliminating the one and two dollar notes, which would force people to start using the dollar coins.

I have it on good authority that the reason there will not be anymore pennies in the near future is because the world will end soon. There is this guy walking around the city with a sign that says so and he wouldn't do that if it wasn't real.

According to the Mayan or Aztec calender, the end of the world is on December 21, 2012. So, anyone want to donate any coins to me?

Just for the record, Y2K was avoided because the world spent an estimated $500 Billion trying to fix the problem. Of course, I have a Macintosh so I was safe.

I don't think that the money spent fixed the problem, most of the technology was able to handle it fine I believe.

Lets not forget, the nickel can also be considered endangered. Last I heard it costs about 8 cents to produce a nickel.

okay, someone else do the math. PN = Total Cost to make Pennies and Nickels - Coin values * Mintage SD = Total Cost to make State Quarters and Dollar Coins - Coin values * Mintage SD - PN = How much the mint is supposidly losing. Someone may have already done this math and figured out that by making the larger coins collectible it will offset the costs of making lower currency.

I like the idea of bringing the caucasian woman mocking the aboriginal American with a headdress cent too. But people would be up in arms if you removed Lincoln.
