I like the safety deposit box idea more and more.

Hide your currency in between the pages of a text book - most students wont think to look there.

In reality, take pictures to look at and store your bill/notes in a safe location off campus. I kept things in the safety deposit box until the collection got too large then opted for other means. As members note, a good safe, perhaps with a fire rating, is the way to go eventually.

If a roommate needs beer money, your crisp notes will be sacrificed at face value. Very similar to a shrinking collection going to the ice cream man.

I think that everyone is way over thinking this, he is going to college, not being sent to a penal colony. These are fellow students, not fellow inmates. I don't know about the worth of your collection (tens of thousands, thousands, hundreds?), but again , having lived in dorms with roommates from age 12-21, the rooms all lock with only the occupants having keys. The buildings are all secure with key-card access. Theft is met with expulsion, college career and subsequent professional career ruined, so theft by fellow students is not common.

Aside from the fact that most dorm rooms have thousands and thousands of dollars worth of laptops, iPods, Flat screens, computer components, easily more stealable and pawnable than trying to secret your closet safe out of a secure building, past the many, many students that live there, to a location where they have gathered a variety of safe breaking tools, risking their college careers to get what?, beer money ?, snack money ? In the ten years I lived in dorms, the most I ever lost was the ten or twenty dollars I had stuffed in my desk drawer for emergency snack and beer money.

Don't store your $20,000 currency collection in your room, but if you want to enjoy your hobby at college, buy a safe, keep the honest people honest and worry about your $1200 laptop or your $300 ipod and $500 smart phone instead.

Thanks ghost rider. I will look into having a gunsafe too. I'm going to go to the mall today, I'll see if they have gunsafes these. I hope they're within my spending budget, and that no one will get suspicious of it.

John, she lives in the city but not close to where my dorm is. It's a big city I'll be in, and I prefer having my things within a walking distance instead of having to take transport, especially if I have to switch transport.

frodo, I'm also worried about visitors, that is one of my concerns. Mom's friend and roommate may be trustworthy, their visitors may not.
In most areas of Jakarta, you can't even leave your handbag unzipped while walking around. True story: one of my teachers was going home from work on a train and she felt someone going through her book bag (not a backpack, one that you carry with your hands), she ignored it because there's nothing in it except for textbooks.

Rackster, I'm very rough with my textbooks, so I won't trust myself putting collectibles there. I'm very gentle with novels though, but the banknote holders would be sticking out of them.

I'll rent a safety deposit box (for the most valuable stuff) and get a safe for my room (to store those that I bring home to look), but my penny boxes will have to stay with my mom' friend due to space limits, so I think I'll get a safe there too.

I'll go over to my mom's friend's house when my exams are over and see the conditions there. She said she has an empty basement that she'll be storing my stuff in while I'm gone, so I'll throw in a couple of packs of desiccant in case there's a humidity problem.

Edit: denco7, you're right, but a laptop doesn't have a face value and it's not cash. It's not the most liquid asset. If I have a safe I guess I'll be able to store other valuables in there too.

an empty basement

I live in an unfinished basement... if there is bare cement floors DO NOT put any box on the floor... aside from flooding due to water pipes and drains then there is the general humidity. Even with desiccants the boxes just wick moisture out of the floor.

Just hope for shelves and a desk or table

A quick and dirty hiding place would be your post office box.
Recycle an envelope with your name and address on it.
The mail is sacred.

Say no to the basement. Bad for coins and worse for papers.

Just want to add my two thoughts:
1. Don't get an upright gun safe. In this day and age, that is asking for trouble. As soon as someone sees that, you would have the police raiding your dorm in no time. I bet the university even has a policy against not only firearms, but firearm paraphernalia as well. Even though it has nothing to do with guns, you might end up with a major headache or even expulsion. I think you would be ok with an ammo/pistol safe, just not an upright safe that is an obvious gun safe.
2. No matter what you get, make sure it is firmly attached to something. Maybe get some long screws and attach it to a bed post or something. Not only will that mean it cant easily be carried off, but many small safes can be opened simply by dropping it on the corner. It will just pop right open. No joke.

I don't know anything about basements, so thanks for the warning Aslan. I hope they have a table they can spare. I just have this cardboard box I made into a small table and that is the thing I was going to put my stuff in.

matthewvincent, I don't really get mail so I'll need to get a new envelope and send something to myself. I've read of mail getting lost/opened/stolen, does that happen often? And do the post office x-ray the mail to see what's in it?

I think you would be OK with the Stack-on ammo/pistol cabinet posted above. You might even layer protection. Maybe a normal upright gym locker, with a small safe bolted to the bottom. Cover it with dirty clothes and nobody would ever even notice it.

I didn't see your reply earlier Josh. I won't get a big upright one then, a small one will be sufficient. Then attach it to something. Some DIY work I'll be doing before I settle in! But I'll say no to covering it with dirty clothes, that's disgusting.

I guess a small safe in my room and a safety box is the best option. I'll ask if there's a less humid place in her house.

go to the back of your local hardware store
they usually have piles of pallets stacked up
procure a wooden pallet.store your stuff on the pallet in the basement..it will keep it off damp floor
do not use card board boxes to store your clothes and stuff
get plastic tubs with lids...keeps bugs, mice out
cockroachs eat cardboard boxs

don't do it. I lived in a dorm, and they became suspicious when I got a packed around once a week in the mail.

It's way too risky, Maybe second semester once you know who you're bunking with but what happens if your roomie needs beer money?

Another suggestion here... I'm not sure how much PO boxes or safety deposit boxes cost, and if the basement doesn't appeal to you, take a look at mini storage.

The newer ones all have security fences and cameras and access codes, then you can put your own lock on it, and it's only $20-$30 a month and allows for more stuff than just a PO or deposit box. And might be closer to the campus than the basement.

I would leave it at my parents house as well, its original home. The reason why I never ever like the idea of a safety deposit box is because your valuables are in the hands of a company and if you don't have proof that there yours you wont get them back, also the risk of them being robbed and if a natural disaster happens or the place burns down or there is an untrustworthy employee. You cant trust university kids but you can trust your family.
