So I ordered a 1870 3 cent piece off ebay from this seller crazycream36. Not a high price kind but altogether a piece of Amercian history in my eyes. I received the coin today and this is what I found: The outside box was check book box which looked like it had been stepped on 5 times. So I start carrying it to the house and as I'm walking I can hear the jingle of the loose coin inside the box which just wanted to make me scream at that point. I opened the box carefuly knowing the coin is loose and go figure I still drop it. Inside the box, this guy/gal attempted to put it inside a used lottery scratch off ticket the was folded somewhat into a square and then taped. I open the lottery ticket (which had about 5 openings in it to allow the coin to slip out) to find that attached to the ticket was a paper clip which I assume was supposed to hole the coin attached! What kind of person would do such a thing..... The seller has almost 900 feedback all positive and is supposed to be dealing in collectibles? Just cannot wrap my mind around why someone would treat such a beautiful piece of art/American history with such direspect..... Any others have such an experience? Rant over-

I've had some pretty bad packaging -- taping a coin to paper, etc. But nothing like a paperclip on a coin. Wow.

I am sorry man, but I had to laugh. I got one one time that was rolled and heavily taped up in a magazine page and the envelope it came in was made from other magazine pages. I thought I was going to have to burn it open in order to get to the coin. The amount of tape used to make that crap probably cost more than a new envelope and proper packaging.

Like tim' I've been on the other end of the spectrum. I've had people pack things that were darn near impossible to open up, not that I don't appreciate the effort of course. Still always funny to me.

awful, just awful.... bad packaging burns me up so much that every time I buy something I ask them to package carefully and use extra tape on the box.

Now that I think about it, it is pretty comical....what an idiot. What really gets me is that he paid via usps 2.59$ to ship a 3 cent piece because of his super cool check box he sent it in.... I paid .88$ for shipping according to the ebay auction....guess he/she wont be in business for long.

A seller from the Ukraine sent me a bulk order of uncleaned Romans that deserves a shout out.
He had the box totally wrapped up in packaging tape. Then, I opened it up and there was that spray foam insulation surrounding a smaller box (effectively creating a brick). Once I got all of the rock hard foam off of it, the second box was all taped up, too! When I broke it open he had the coins shrink-wrapped in an aluminum-lead alloy foil that was equally impossible to remove. Talk about impenetrability.....

How about a half dollar put loose in a small envelope? The amazing thing is that it was delivered!

michaeln1306, what a terrible shipping job! Someone here got a coin taped to a 3x5 card. Really, it's not much of an effort to ship an item well. I appreciate that shipper who really sealed up that package, because I've my mail from some regions arrives all opened.

I've gotten coins in a flip, taped to paper, and then taped to the inside of the envelope. I was afraid that I was foing to damage the coin while I was cufting through the tape and unraveling. At least the paperclip should have come off easily enough!

That's pretty bad! The good news is... it reminded me to check my lotto ticket. I'll let you know if I win.

Back when PO handling included things like three-story drops, I'd package coins, address them, and throw them down the stairs to a concrete floor. Then I'd take them to the PO.
Boxes were wrapped in three directions with fiberglass reinforced tape. I shipped a bag of silver that arrived "looking like a basketball", but not short a dime.
Never mark anything "FRAGILE". They misread it as "FOOTBALL".
Label on box: DO NOT BEND
Clerk, box over knee: DO TOO BEND

I had 50oz JM silver bullion bars shipped loose via UPS. My driver is handing me the box and I notice the bar quite visible from the hole in the box. Thats enough to get your blood going.
