I am thinking of getting one for the weighing of raw coins.

Which one do people suggest?

Get one that weighs to AT LEAST .01 ounce.
.001 would be better but more expensive.
Stay away from China.

It might be overkill, but I use a frankford arsenal powder scale. A good one can be had for around $30. (I use a plastic tray for the coins). I'd recommend 1500 or 3000 grain capacity. 1000 grain = 2.08333333 troy ounces. Make sure it also measures ozt.

Personally, I use a scale that I purchased at a discount hardware store and was made in China. But then I'm using it to weigh 1981 pennies and saving the copper ones and discarding the zinc. They're cheap, affordable, and extremely easy to replace.

Just my opinion, but then you didn't say what you were going to be using it for.

diabetic scales can be found in most pharmacies. I think I paid around $19 for mine - good to .01 grams

Make that grams not ounces. .01 ounces would only be accurate to .3 grams

Perhaps I am being paranoid, but if I go into a store or order online a scale with the ability to weigh to the thousands of an ounce, am I going to be on some DEA list. There are only two reasons that I can think of that a layman would own such a scale?

Well you are asking on a coin collecting forum... not 'thug.net'. So when the government agent that is assigned to personally watch over you 24/7 sees you buy a scale they will already know which of the 'two reasons' is more likely
