Hold up, when you say collecting currency, do you mean Canadian or US? Or other? Just asking since you could collect foreign/darkside and not have to worry about any of your coins getting spent. That would narrow down the places you would have to start looking in the event that they got stolen. Kind of like collecting buttons - who's going to steal that?!
I really like Westcoin's comment, but still a lockbox and cable should be alright for things of low value. Make sure it's not noisy, as in if shaken one could not determine what's in the box. Please don't buy any cheap locks - you really do get what you pay for and they are easy to pick or break, so never tell anyone what's under your lock and key, just say they're documents.

Bank Safe box. My bank offers 3 sizes from $25 to $65 per year. You can access it during normal business hours, are very secure, and you won't have to move it when you graduate. The small might do. And as a student that was plagued with distractions, I say focus mostly on your studies. Good Luck

My collection is mostly Canadian with a couple of random US stuff. Which is why they're very spendable. I also keep the coins in rolls so they don't go everywhere on my desk so if 1 gets stolen the whole stack is gone.
westcoin, I'm very sorry to hear that too. I can imagine it's very hard to lose what you worked hard for. It does look like they had no idea what you have there, they just saw gold and stole it. Since they never showed up again I have a bad feeling they were melted down.
I'm thinking safety box is the best option to store the majority of my collection in. I get distracted very easily. I can study for 5 minutes, then a coin on my desk catches my eye and I end up looking at coins for two hours. To make it not so noisy I guess I could put them in a box and tie them. Or put padding.
I just got an update from the dorm, it looks like I might be getting a room there instead of going boarding. Hope for a single room if I do, since I won't need to worry about a roommate or pay for commuting.

Even living in a single room with no roommates in collage, I still would not bring much in the way of valuables to school. Too many dorms are targets of theft these days, unfortunately the times have changed for the worse in this regards. Get the safe deposit box, or hide anything very well that you do take!
Heck these days I worry enough about my computer (laptop) and phone. My coin books are probably the one thing that is really got value to me and on the marketplace, but no thief is going to know their value and they weigh too dang much to be able to get away with much. Quite few books I have are worth more than $200 now, and many are $100+ but I'm talking several shelves of big books, most thieves wouldn't even blink at them, but instead go for a $20 iPod on the table.

College dorms are no place to amass and store wealth. If you do 10% better in school, you'll have 100% more money for the coin collection. Delayed gratification. Very real.

No, I will keep the most of it in a safety box. But if I have no roommate it means I can look at my collection freely in my room because I know I'll be alone. I know not many people realise the collector value of coins (and other things too), leading them to get spent. But if they know the collector value, they will sell it. I'll get a safe too, I can also keep my "precious electronics" (what else do I call it?) in it when I need to.
Plus, I get distracted too easily. I try not to, but if the coins are constantly in one room with me it's not easy. I know it's better to study now and play later but these shinies are so tempting.

The best safe is something that doesn't look like a safe. Thought of this as I was reading current postings in this thread.
You can make a safe using old deodorant packaging. Take "Rightguard" for instance. When you are finished with the item, remove the left over deodorant and purchase a candle that closely approximates the deodorant.
1: using duct tape for a coffer dam and plug up the guide hole. 2: melt the candle and pour into the coffer dam and form the top of the candle wax to closely match the curves on the top of a new deodorant. 3: Screw the threaded rod into the new top to secure it as one item. 4: Take the plastic tab from a new purchase and put it on top of your creation.
This "safe" is for misdirection and can be used to store currency in (no coins). When placed in an out of the way location it looks like a backup for your current using supply.
Hollowed out books with pages glued together could be a similar hide out. The idea is to use something in a non-traditional way. There are lots of ways to hide something.
Be creative.

A hollowed out book! I've always wanted one because I think it's cool, but I can't bring myself to hurt a book I've left my coins and a huge bunch of other stuff that I put in a very big cardboard box and when they came to take it to their house no one can even slide the box (didn't think this through, we had to move everything into plastic bags) at my mom's friend's house and I'm leaving for the airport tonight. I hope all goes well

When I return, I will have some time before school starts, I'll be able to get a safe and safety box during that time, and arrange whatever else is needed. I'm sure I'll arrive home safe, I trust the B777
