I don't hate half dollars. I use them.
As for the small dollar coins, I hate them.

But they used to circulate -- as evidenced by many well worn walkers and previous series. Since most Franklins and certainly Kennedys are high grade, it seems there must have been some sort of social shift in the 40s or 50s. Any theories?

Quote: That would be refreshing and might create some more coin collectors even though it is not the purpose of the mint, but a large source of its revenue. I know quite a few people who even though they aren't coin collectors, have collected Statehood and ATB Quarters. When they first came out, the non-coin collecting coworkers and I would actively search for Statehood Quarters and trade them back and forth. Something new, and well publicized, could help create many new coin collectors!

Yup, until people starting haording kennedy's and silver was removed from coins. then businesses just dropped them since people weren't using them during the 5 year period the kenedy was still in part silver and by 1970 businesses were already having no place to put them having used the drawer space for other things over those 6 years and then register manufacturers stopped designing for room for halves and we end up where we are today with people not even knowing they are money and can still be used to buy things because cashiers do not even know what money is.

I don't hate half dollars and I love to collect the Kennedy halfs.
But the coinage system in this country is broken. in order we need to;
1 eliminate the penny. 2 make a non-zinc cheaper nickel (aluminum) 3 circulate the dollar coin (eliminate the dollar bill) 4 circulate the two dollar bill 5 create and circulate a two dollar coin
The 50c coin just doesn't fit so should really be eliminated as well.
The cents should be recalled for proper disposal.
Common sense might never prevail because business interests will.
"(eliminate the dollar bill)" added for comprehensiveness.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

Missing the most important part...eliminate the dollar bill
The half is toast for commerce and talking about it repeatedly won't bring it back

Quote: Missing the most important part...eliminate the dollar bill I think that was implied under "circulate the dollar coin" since most of us realize that is the only way it will circulate.

I think working as a cashier has led me to realize that people don't dislike half dollars in particular (usually) but all coins in general. Roll after roll of coins must be broken for change going out because it's not replenished by change coming in, unless the customer who dumps $5 in quarters in my hands to pay comes through.
Coins in general really just don't circulate anymore. From the mint to a roll to change to a jar to a Coinstar and back to a roll. Sadly, this is all coins are, and likely all they ever will be until cash is eliminated or inflation catches up to make even the quarter useless.

I love all 3 denominations and regularly ask for them at the bank. I spend them everywhere that I can. I mostly do it because I love circulating the "odd money". I doubt that any of these will ever be used by the general population to any large degree, but that doesn't stop me. In fact, it spurs me on even more. I know that I have piqued more than one person's interest in these just because they never see them. I love it.
I also feel that despite what many people say that credit cards and electronic payments will take over, I don't believe it. Cash will ALWAYS be around. Perhaps not as common as it is now or in the past, but it will live on. Cash makes people feel secure, because they have something.

Cash will certainly always be around. The gray economy and the black market demand it.

You're asking why we still have half dollars which aren't circulated, and why do we have $1 coins and $1 bills when clearly only one of the two would suffice?
That's like asking Congress to agree on something - oh wait, it is!
Just sayin! :)
