Am I seeing this right? I saved OBW rolls from 2005-2010 due to the satin coin thing going on. I was da wing them to search one day in the future for my collection but prices for dime rolls and now this?! I don't know if I can save them if they are fetching this much money! Any thoughts or discussion as what to do? Save for myself to search when I am ready in a decade? Sell and build on my collection? Are they reaching peak prices? Save for investment? What to do?!!!! https://www.ebay.com/itm/2009-P-Jef...p-cvip-panel

Quote:Using the latest Mint circulating coin production figures for 2009 Jefferson nickels, 39.36 million from Denver and 39.84 million from Philadelphia were struck, for a total of 79.20 million coins. Seems like an overreaction, there are plenty of them out there IMO.

I presume that the MS rolls of 2009 P and D nickels are being hoarded by speculators. 79.2 million is the lowest mintage since 1959. The average is over 1 billion per year and 2021 they minted 1.7 billion. A roll of 2009P went for about $153 the other night. The 2009D, with nearly the same mintage, sell for about $65 per roll. Go figure.

Yeah, for "BU" they are selling for like $4-$6 each P or D. a roll of nickels, OBW and supposed to be BU, can sell for $160-$200ish I think. they don't come up for sale that often at all really in that format. most sellers are piecing them out for $4-$6 each instead.
2009 D dimes are a steal still in comparison to the nickels.

They are selling the nickel Philly rolls for $65.
They probably have a fairly good inventory but that is not a sure thing. It is a wholesale price though.

Almost all nickel collections, even Jefferson nickel collections end right smack dab at 1964. Going forward I believe there will be more collections starting in 1965 so there will be a continuing demand. And, as you said, these are not satin finish so Gems and choice coins will be far scarcer. I tend to dump cheap rolls and keep the choice better dates. and sell the typical better dates. Of course, now I'm selling almost everything because of my age. Roll the dice and take your chances. I wish I had set aside a few thousand nice choice 2009 coins. Then I'd have the same "problem".

Quote: Seems like an overreaction, there are plenty of them out there IMO. This is certainly a possibility. But I've seen enough '09's in circulation to know that at least most of them got into change. Of course with such high mintages even a few percent is a lot of coins. Many of the dimes and nickels were released in Puerto Rico and my hunch is there just wasn't enough interest to set aside massive quantities.

Agreed, I started my own nickel album version beginning at 1965. It seemed like a good juncture between the "avalanche" of nickels of 1964 and the SMS of 1965. Plus I started dime and quarter albums for the clads of '65.

I can't stop thinking of my 2009 p Jefferson roll. What does the forum want me to do? Try my luck on ebay and hope to get the $200+ they are selling for, hold onto it, or open it up and share my findings here? Should I put it out of my mind for another 10 years? I was leaning toward selling and just buying a slabbed example but none seem to be Available for under $350 in FS ms66. There aren't any others that grade well either. Should I roll the dice? Chances are I'll only get one MS 65 if I'm lucky. Probably not even full step. I could maybe sell 5-10 and make $50 on the other nice ones. Heck, I just saw a roll of VG 2009 nickels sell for over $40!!! Is my curiosity worth losing $200? Potential higher profit in the future? But what if?!!!!! That one ultra gem popped out as the only MS67 graded?!!! Honestly folks! I will go with the crowd on this one! Majority wins. Be honest with what you would do. Open and share? Sell? My decision is now up to the masses. Guide me well!!!

If you don't need the money then carefully salt that roll away in a tube . Should be worth a lot more in a few years or more .

If you can really sell them for $200 I'd spot check for Gems and go ahead and sell what isn't.
You can replace them at $65 per roll and get more chances for Gems.
Somehow it's hard to believe you can get $200. Even if you can you probably can't for rolls you've checked.

http://www.azcoinexchange.com/buylist.htmBottom of the page. I don't know if he'd want to sell only one or two rolls but this is "wholesale" on these. I know nothing of the quality of these either or how many sources they come from. I also don't know anything about the market for these coins. I have seen buy offers over $100 in the past. It's harder to keep up with markets now days since there are very few published buy offers and most prices are set by ebay at "retail".

Will $200 make a meaningful difference in your life? If no, I would hang on to them. Otherwise, if you need the money, seems like a decent time to take the profits.

The 2009 Nickel mintages are low for modern coins, but in no way are they rare.
I would sell them and take the profit.
