Did you guys know quarters are now .999 fine in these silver sets? It's annoying.

I mean, odd weights that look like other things, can confuse folks in SHTF scenarios.

Yup, started in 2019. A law passed in 2015 allowed it to happen.

@Jbuck I wonder what the rationale is for the change.

You have any insights? It kills their stackablility for me, to an extent.

Other than extended die life and quality mentioned in the article linked above, I believe that 99.9% silver is easier to source than 90%.

I guess I'll just have to adjust to it.

It does make me wonder how popular these issues are.

Also, I checked the US mint webpage they charge $60 for $20 in silver if I am reading correctly...

Seems a bit overboard.

The mint jacked the prices in 2020 when they were having silver supply issues. As typical, prices did not fall once supplies came back.

2020 proof quarter set is going for $14 according to Numismedia. They have the silver proof quarter set at $78.

@Bump11 I believe this is the silver set. If they are not they are being returned, because that is what the seller advertised them as.

The package matches, the regular proof set is red. They used to be the opposite, but apparently they switched that as well.

I assumed it was the silver set but couldn't say for sure.

@Bump111 I just can't understand that price point. It is more than 3x it's intrinsic value. A 300% premium has to kill sales.

But for somebody building a set of silver proof ATB Quarters, they have no choice but to pay the price. What is worse is that you have to buy the 2021 set with the Alabama and Washington Crossing to complete the set even though you only need the silver Alabama Tuskegee.

These aren't really a stacking coin, they are numismatic product , this isn't something you should be stacking. For stacking you are looking for the lowest premium, so you should be getting silver rounds, constitutional silver or bars.

As I understand it, they get 600-800 90% strikes from a die pair, and they get 1800 die strikes from a die pair using .999 instead.
Also, they have 80x shutowns for maintenance a day with 90% blanks, and only have 20x shutdowns a day for maintenance with .999 blanks.
there is slightly less customer returns and slightly less damage loss due to hazed strikes with .999 blanks.
overall the mint did an analysis and determined they would have savings and increase production by using .999 blanks.

there was also that there is a ready made supply of .999 that everyone uses around the world while 90% is sort of a special order now a days.

all around savings for them to use .999 instead of the 90%, not necessarily savings on the blanks though, on operations- time and wear and tear.

the 2015 law that mandated "not less than 90%" made 40% silver or 35% silver impossible without an act of congress to make that so. but they had the option to go to .999% because of it and so they did.

And I'd say if the price is right for the 2019 silver proof quarters ( it was in 2020 when they increased the prices) you could stack them. Still too expensive for stacking though, proof coins usually are.

Apparently they aren't too expensive to stack in this instance :)

May get them under melt before they even arrive if current trends hold.

Are mintages based on orders, if so I wager the mintages will dwindle on a lot of this stuff, because of the insane prices.

Also, if the mintages are much lower why are we worried about conserving dies?

Why does it suddenly make a 300% mark up reasonable?

I really, and truly wish I could understand why people don't boycott these products.

Value is determined by the secondary market, not the mint.

I mean, look at all those low mintage coins from the 70's made by the Franklin mint. I stack them, and cheap, all time.
