I keep reading more and more on the threads about the special ideas they are doing for the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy half, that people keep saying along the lines of "This would be a great send-off to the Half-Dollar" or, this would be a good time to end the half" and, well, you get the idea. So I must ask, do these same people feel that we should quit making $2 bills, an DOLLAR coins as long as we are not going to get rid of $1 bills? And if so, why do you "want" them discontinued? If there were no odd denominations, there would be no fun in spending cash. (Of course, if I got my way, and got these denominations circulating, and they became an every day thing, I'm sure they too, would become boring as well, like a $5 bill or a quarter ) Here are the cases: HALVES: The half don't circulate, because banks will not offer them to customers, and vendors will not retool for halves, even though they have the ability (or so I am told) And although they are currently minted for collector ONLY purposes, the Mint has stated that, when circulation half reserves are low, they WILL mint more for circulation purposes, and until that happens, what is so wrong with the Mint continuing half production, as long as people are having fun collecting them and the Mint is still making profits off them? DOLLAR COINS: These are no longer made for circulation purposes either, which is a shame, but these are something "I" question "Why do they even still make them, when they still have $1 bills?" However, I do not advocate the end of the dollar coin. I support the elimination of the $1 bill, the penny and the nickel, to free up spaces in cash registers for halves, dollar coins and $2 coins. Many vending machines already accept and dispense dollar coins, so, why quit making them? $2 BILLS: Ah, the only one of the three denominations mentioned here in this topic that is actually MADE for "circulation" Now, I love the $2 bill a bit more than the half, but I think it needs a redesign to match all other higher denominations of U.S. paper money. Either that, or replace it with a $2 coin (as said above) So, why do people say to quit making $2 bills, as long as they circulate? And many vending machines can accept $2 bills and many already do. So, in conclusion, why can't vending and self checkout machines just be MADE to accept and dispense these denominations here, just as they are in many other countries, instead of simply eliminating them from circulation? These vending and self checkout people could invest in equipment to accept and dispense them. So the big question is: WHY GET RID OF THEM? (Are they bothering you that much? ) Edited by Fox 06/21/2014 01:54 am

I collect halves and dollar coins, so I don't hate them. I don't have a problem with the mint making them just for collectors either, since I stopped getting halves out of circulation years ago. However, (IMHO) I do think that the JFK half is WAY overdue for a complete redesign.
Around here, people seem to be moving away from using cash or checks and going to credit cards. I could see vendors adding card readers to their vending machines before adding the capability for halves and dollar coins.

I spend half dollars virtually every day at my local supermarket. I either walk or bike and grab something and use my backpack to carry stuff back home on my hour round trip. So I'm know at the store as the half dollar guy.. LOL !! like today I spent 6 halves and somehow I got a new cashier that has never seen them before and I go there almost everyday.

@Fox, By now everyone should know about your Half Dollar post.
I like halves but I don't like the fact they're minted for collectors ONLY. This is the reason I collect the proofs instead of the whole set.

It`s not that we hate them, but we just want a new design of some kind, preferably non-presidential in my opinion. I also don`t the prejudice of "They aren`t used anyway, let`s just sell them to collectors." The U.S. Mint just simply doesn`t want to make enough because there aren`t enough people that use them.

Quote: HALVES: The half don't circulate, because banks will not offer them to customers This is incorrect. Banks do not get coins for anyone but businesses. the reasons banks don't carry halves is because their business customers don't use them. Businesses drive what coinage a bank has as well as anyone making a deposit. Halves do not circulate because businesses stopped using them when people hoarded them after the keneedy came out to end the franklins short run and to honor the man who jsut died. Quote: DOLLAR COINS: These are no longer made for circulation purposes either, which is a shame it is a shame but again it is not the banks fault but businesses fault. they do NOT want to change (no pun intended) the way they handle money. most businesses want to get away from cash but are required to take it. thus why so many cahsiers do not know what a half or dollar coin is or how to count it. this is a failure of businesses and lack of education in our country. Quote: $2 BILLS: people are superstitious because of some reason about them. something that has been handed down about bad luck or some crap that was probably started by businesses to prevent people from spending them. as with the laws themselves, everything in this country is done for the businesses, not for the people.

I collect AND spend my halves. I will get a bag from the mint, Pick out a few nice ones, Spend the rest.
Why not? They are made for collectors only now right? That's what makes it more fun to spend them.
So I pay a few more dollars for them. That's why I Keep the best and put the rest in circulation. It More then makes up for the premium and could get some youngster started in collecting as well.
As far as the Design, I personally feel it Does need a re-vamp.
Let's put some more ART into them.
On That note, It Would be a great time to end the Kennedy and Put some different History IN people's HANDS!
Just my opinion.

With inflation I think it's weird that the highest face value coin in general circulation in the USA is still the quarter, which will buy practically nothing on its own.
I remember that for the first two years (1983-4) that the British nickel-brass pound coin was issued, it was practically never seen in circulation. I would get them from the bank and spend them, and I got the same sort of reaction from shopkeepers that you guys get when spending halves or dollar coins. It was only after the Bank of England stopped printing the £1 note that the £1 coin started to become common. Also by then the halfpenny had been withdrawn, so there was space for the £1 in the tills!

there is space in the tills now for the $1 coin or half. the problem is that space is taken up with extra rolls. most places dont remove anything form the till until a shift change or whatever. only if too many bills fill it do they remove anything. they never want to ADD to the till in forms of coins because that would take an extra minute away from the managers time to be paid and get nothing. thus they stuff extra rolls into the last con slot to weigh down the drawer with, then they complain when they have no room for odd coinage.
i know pound isn't euro, but doesn't' euro have like 8 coins now? how many coins in the pound till?
and why is it humans are giving change anywhere anyway now? 10 years ago those machines existed that you fill with change and it just counts it out and gives the coins to the customer and the cashier only had to deal with bills and incoming change. why not just have machines that give change and bills back and you got plenty of room in the till for all types of coins. till still has to be counted including the little machine anyway.
the easiest way to make things work are the hardest to get people to do cause they are lazy.

Comes up all the time. So many people just don't like to carry large quantities of coins. And if large as a Half Dollar, might as well be paper. Most don't like the baby sized dollar coins because they look to much like a Quarter and again, why not just a piece of paper. Those large Ike dollar coins too were just to much for our lazy population. And gum ball machines don't take that stuff. Why get stuck in a line if someone tries using something that a casheir has no idea what it is? And as I've said so many times now, all cash is on it's way out. Soon all will be credit and debit cards. So why worry about the future of a Half Dollar.

I adore, simply adore large coins. Love the Ikes and Kennedys. I like how they feel in my hand and how they clink together. I need 'em. I covet them. I'm obsessed.

I don't hate the half dollar. I hate having the same design on the coin for FIFTY YEARS. I also am not a fan of putting a President on a coin. We should have images of liberty, not actual people. In my opinion, anyway.

I favor a mandatory redesign every 25 years and get former presidents and actual people off non-commemorative coins. My personal favorite would be to have a Barber design back on a circulating coin!

That would be refreshing and might create some more coin collectors even though it is not the purpose of the mint, but a large source of its revenue.
